Question Calgary Adult Recreation Soccer Leagues?

I wanted to get a mens recreational soccer team together for spring and summer. The skill level would be beginner soccer players, slightly above average athletic people.

I am looking for suggestions for both outdoor and indoor.

One league I am not interested in is the Calgary Sport and Social Club.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Most of the Rec ones are co-ed rather than men's only.

Try Fusion, that league is relatively....unskilled....but again, its co-ed. They might have a men's league, but I dont know.

Have you checked out CUSA? I used to play in that league for years and they have about 10 divisions ranging from beginner to expert

http://www.calgarycoedsoccer.com/

i play in this coed league.
it's only indoor, but has refs unlike the Sports and Social club.
it can be a good challenge depending on the opposition.

If you're ok with adding women to your roster - then call the Co-ed league or calgary fusion.

If not - then CUSA is your only option... unless the Commercial men's league is still around??

CUSA will put you in div 6 - the teams are 99% horrible. However, there is usually one or two teams that are brand new - jam packed with experienced men forming their own team, or kids straight out of the minor system. They will destroy you.

Yeah, CUSA at any level is not really 'for fun.' Its pretty competitive.

As most people posted, CUSA is a competitive league. It is also a violent league where I've seen players headbutt and slide from behind other players without any cards.

Play at the Calgary Coed Soccer league, but be ready to be playing at late evenings during spring. It should be fine for summer as not many people plays indoor.

I've played in each of the coed leagues in Calgary, and I think the best choice would be the one run by CUSA. At least the times of the games are not completely out to lunch. I had a game for Fusion start at 11pm the other night....brutal trying to get up for work the next day.

If you decide to play CUSA men's league, yes it is more competitive, but you can also play in lower divisions and be alright. There will be a couple teams each year that will stomp you because they are newly formed and moving up the ranks, just accept that and you will be just fine.

I think this post to be fair is extremely knee jerk. the league is not violent, yes there are some dirty players but I've seen more guys get hurt over the years playing co-ed.

Yeah, I've found more concern stepping on to the pitch against people who know very little about the game and think a two footed slide tackle is perfectly acceptable. It is more about finding a group of players that respect each other on the field.
I also have to mention that women are beasts out there, some of the most violent games I have seen involve female teams.

Not to say that the Glamazons can't get into a bit of a dust up, because they certainly can throw their 110-150 pound weight around.

But that is nothing compared to getting trucked into the boards by a guy that runs 6'5" 235.

The problem that I have is the lack of discipline and control coming for the refs in that league. The last game I saw, it was more of a bench clearing rather than a game. The ref had to pull a few red cards and he didn't bother, he lost the control of the game. Play hard, but clean.

The dirtiest team I've ever played against and also saw play in coed was Crew Latino. Some of those guys got into fights and even the cops had to be called because the guys were waiting for the other team to get into a fight.

That happens with CUSA - but it happens in hockey and other sports too. Sometimes the blood heats up and ##### happens. Most of the time - in the 10+ years I've played in CUSA, once a season does it kick off and rarely does someone get chinned. Colo Colo used to be bad too - Latin blood gets hot quickly.

I find with Co-ed that when you play with people who don't know how to tackle - add in that you're playing at 50% yourself because you're scared of hurting the girls, it's a recipe for disaster!

CUSA looks like a pretty cool league, but it sounds like it might be a little to serious for what I'm going for, long season, and also expensive ($4,000+?). They even have a transfer deadline!

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like there are any other mens leagues out there.

Thanks for the suggestions.

There really arent, and while CUSA isnt as violent as all that, although it can be, it is far more competitive that what you seem to be looking for.

What about U of C Intramurals? It looks like they have a mens league. Anyone know the skill level of that league?

It varies widely. There are some garbage, average and very above average teams. I quit because there were guys there who would go full tilt while I was using it as practice.

Also, its in Gyms rather than regular fields and I dont believe there is a ref, at least, there wasnt when I played.

I don't know if Calgary is using this yet, but check out meetup.com for Calgary and look for a soccer club. I do see they have a soccer group on there. If its not active, get started and make one!

http://www.meetup.com/ShowUpAndPlaySoccer/

(When I moved to California and was looking to get into soccer, I joined Meetup and they have at least 1 pickup per day and 2-3 pickup's on weekends)

Like Locke... organized leagues are too much for me, the full tilt just gets to me and I'd rather play a skill game then getting slide tackled from behind or my ankles trashed.
