India unveils $35 computer... price could drop to $10
From the same country that just introduced a new car with a sell price of $2500, India now is looking at building a computer that will sell for $35.

India has unveiled a $35 computer prototype as part of its program to provide connectivity to its students and teachers at affordable prices.
Kapil Sibal, the country's human resources development minister, displayed what he called a low-cost computing and access device in New Delhi on Thursday.
The ministry said the price would gradually fall to $10 a piece.

Subsidizing the price is stupid.

LOL
I'm pretty sure you just throw away the computer if (when?) something goes wrong.

It's for students and teachers, and the intent is to develop the national communication & education infrastructure. Subsidies make sense to me... Canada subsidizes the hell out of education.
What is the subsidy? I didn't see it in the article, maybe I missed it.

Why would anyone think subsidizing the price of something like this to be stupid, especially in a country like India?

but the Indian government plans to subsidize their sale to students such that they'll cost only $20. The goal is to have them selling for as little as $10 in the future.

I kinda doubt that you can produce the thing for $35, much less for $10, which means the government is going to eat up a lot of costs.
Something I don't agree with. I understand that students need access to 'technology', but there are a lot better ways of doing this than subsidizing prices of computers.
Does Canada give away tablet computers for $35? Or are students required to purchase their own? Would it be worth it for Canada to subsidize prices of those tablets, or would the money be spent better in other areas?
I think there are a lot of areas the money could be better spent.

Educating your workforce is one of the best ways to spend your money for the long-term. Smart people make money for not only themselves but their country.

I dunno, a computer these days is a vital of a tool as one can have. What else would you propose?

I agree, vital, especially for students and teachers.
What I would spend it on? More scholarship funding, money for more universities, teachers. Money for vital technology.
Lets face it, the $35 computer is a GREAT idea. Subsidized or not. But is it THAT vital?
Being able to browse internet, look at PDFs and watch Youtube doesn't sound like much of a computer to me.
Now, if the government would do a 'one laptop per child' type deal for a student that goes to university, I would say that is a better idea.
Then again, I don't know the ACTUAL cost of manufacturing this thing. So who knows how much it will cost.
A couple hundred million? Might be too much, might be nothing.
I do doubt that they just cost $35. People in the US would be all over that.

Canada already subsidizes computers and the promotion of education.
It's called a library.

Again, a library is vital for research and a whole lot of other stuff. But this computer seems like a toy.

Well, it's just like the $100.00 laptop project that Nicolas Negroponte was working on a few years ago
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ni...per_child.html
So I'm sure that it's possible that these computers could be fairly decent for the small amount of money it'll cost.
