I recently decided not to pay Microsoft again when I aquired another workstation. Instead, I'm using open office, which is just as good. If you haven't heard about it... check it out, it's Free! :P

Abi word is also good if you like a word processor that resembles MS word a little more, though I prefer open office. It's also free

If anyone else knows any >great< free programs, especially alternatives to the essentials, post em up

I've used OO since I got my laptop last year. Almost two years of constant school use, notes every day, etc. No problems at all except for the occassional time I forget to change from a .sxw to .doc before sharing notes with classmates. No biggie though...
Firebird > Internet Explorer
Thunderbird > Outlook
The GIMP is a pretty decent image manipulation package almost as good as Photochop but it's completely free.

Open Office is great. As a Linux user, I don't have to freak out when people send .doc or .xls attachments! Earlier versions of OO, had problems displaying the formatting correctly and opening some files, but I haven't had any problems at all with the latest version.

The think I dislike about GIMP is that its hard as hell to figure out how to use the thing. It's not intuitive at all, but once you get good at it you can do some really cool stuff with it.

Agreed, Gimp is good and will only get better. There's also a free program that is a lot like Adobe Illustrator, I believe it used to be called Killustrator, but then adobe sued them

I happen to work for a company that makes video editing software, unfortunatley, its far from free. If you're looking for free tools though, GNU is always a good source ( www.gnu.org). They make the aforementioned GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). I checked out video manipulation tools on their site and there are several. Unfortunatley, I can't tell you if any are any good or not since I haven't tried any of them. Here is the link
It's worth a shot to check some out if no one else can recommend anything specific.
