Default Reliability of New Volkswagens?

Any positive or negative oppinions on this matter. Specifically the Volkswagen Golf Wagons?

Bought a brand new 2010 Golf last June and haven't had any issues with it. Love my car.

edit: Definitely recommend not buying the City Golf though. They're manufactured in Mexico whereas the comfortline, highline, etc. are made in Germany.

Pylon may be a tad biased but I'd presume he's the most qualified to answer it...

A co-worker has a 2009 or 2010 Passat 2.0T and has had nothing but problems with it. It's been in about 5 times for broken injectors, not to mention the many random check engine lights (VW has no idea why they come on) and the latest thing was the accelerator assembly needed to be replaced for some sort of gas pedal sensor.

As with most german cars phantom check engine lights are common. It will probably be a good safe car until warranty expires

I have a 2011 Touareg TDI. Awesome, awesome vehicle. It's full of gadgets (I loooove gadgets) and is seriously economical for what you get. Probably the best vehicle I've ever owned.

However; it's not without its gremlins. Most notably electrical things (guages, switches, displays) that are constantly on the fritz. Their service (at least South Center fine car on Macleod Trail) is iffy and pricey. They did a bunch of work for me, charged me for the repair at top dollar, and all the problems popped back up (nothing major, just little warning lights that came on for no reason). I gave them a poor rating on the survey, saying I wanted to get called back on it, and that was 4 months ago. Still no call back to follow up from them. I doubt I will ever go back to them based on this, and some of the ridiculous answers they had to my questions.

Anyways, what I've been told is stay away from the lines made in Mexico. Try to buy the vehicles manufactured in Germany.

I have a 2011 Jetta TDI Manual Wagon, that is about a year old now. Love it, love the gas mileage, no issues at all. I'd recommend to anyone. I think that is the same as the Canadian Golf Wagon.

On a related topic, how about Audi's reliability for their vehicles over the last 5 years or so?

I am having a bit of a crisis day today, and had to take the day off to deal with some stuff. But I really would like to give some feedback. There are definitely some pros and cons. Also there are certain vehicles you should be cautious of. Everything should be back to normal tomorrow, and I will chime in then. I will leave you with this though. Things are better than they have ever been for reliability for us. If you are looking at a 2.5 5 cyl, they are fantastic, and have been pretty much trouble free. I wouldn't hesitate as Joe consumer on one of those.

Might want to look into this. Just came out today, specifically for diesels.

There's a CC on my block, and I can't stop staring at it every time I see it. Such a great looking car....definitely one of the nicest sedans in the last few years.

VW has reliability problems built into its DNA, same with Audi. I've been hearing for decades how they are "much better" but in reality they simply don't age well, nice cars when they work. I would suggesting getting an extended warranty and be really nice to your local service manager.

A wise tow truck driver once told me, "I tow more Volkswagens than anything else, and most of the time it's electrical problems".

A friend of mine had a 2008 Jetta 2.0T...he liked driving it, but he had a lot of issues with it. He was pretty happy to hand it back when the lease was up.

Yeah, I know a couple of people with VW's and they're always having issues with them.

I picked up a 2011 Golf 2.5 Comfortline in February. So far, it's been perfect. No complaints at all - fun to drive.

Whatever you do, get a manual. Don't be a p***y

A guy I know recently moved here from Mexico, used to work in Puebla for a VW supplier and told me that he wouldn't buy a Mexican made VW if was the last car on earth. Says they are cutting corners left right and center to make them affordable.

I own a 2007 Passat 2.0T, just bought it in early May. I bought it certified pre-owned, so any issues are covered for a couple years. Had an issue with the trunk latch but it was fixed under warranty. So far its been a blast to drive, looks classy, and I have the peace of mind of a good warranty program for the short term. Service at Fifth Ave Auto Haus has been excellent.

Maybe there will be problems down the road, too early for me to tell. Right now I'm happy with the purchase.
