Icon40 Chemistry Test: Sim Chemistry vs Overall Ratings

Since I have been in charge of the Pens or at least since I brought them into the so-called considered "Top tier" of teams in the CPHL we have always underachieved. I have always built a decent playoff team that can win a couple rounds before bowing out (except last season when we lost to 7 games to the champion Habs in round 1); but the regular season performance has been horrible when the roster is taken into consideration.

So I have decided to look at the next 10 games and see how I match up on paper against these teams and what that means in terms of results. I took the top 12 healthy forwards and top 6 healthy defenseman along with the teams 2 goalies to get an average rating.

Game One:

Pens @ Panthers:
Average Forward Ranting: Pens 68 vs Panthers 57
Average Defenseman Rating: Pens 69 vs Panthers 65
Average Goalie Rating: Pens 81 vs Panthers 74

We hold the advantage in every area in this game. Especially up front. We should be able to outscore this team: We will see what happens.

Game Two: Canucks @ Pens
Forwards:Canucks 64 vs Pens 68
Defense: Canucks 65 vs Pens 69
Goalies: Canucks 77 vs Pens 81

This should be a good example of chemistry vs ratings as we are higher ranked in every aspect but you dont see the huge discrepancy that you see vs the Panthers.

Game 3: Pens @ Sens
Forwards: Pens 68 vs Sens 66
Defense: Sens 69 vs Pens 69
Goalies: Sens 77 vs Pens 81

This is a very close matchup and is made much closer when we take into consideration the ratings of backup goalies. This should be a great example of seeing who can get the big guns firing more effectively.

Game 4: Devils @ Pens
Forwards: Devils 62 vs Pens 68
Defense: Devils 64 vs Pens 69
Goalie: Devils 78 vs Pens 81

We hold a big advantage everywhere except in net. The Devils play us extremely close every game. Will be interesting to seehow this turns out.

Game 5: Pens @ Leafs
Forwards: Pens 68 vs Leafs 62
Defense: Pens 69 vs Leafs 62
Goalies: Pens 81 vs Leafs 76

Another lopsided game on paper. Should be interesting to see what happens when a team built to win plays a rebuilding squad.

Game 6: Stars @ Pens
Forwards: Dallas 65 vs Pens 68
Defense : Dallas 66 vs Pens 69
Goalies: Dallas 65 vs Pens 81

This is an interesting matchup that is also very close ratings wise on paper. The goaltending is a bit lopsided because the Stars have a 50ov currently as their backup goalie. If Hillier is tired it should be a long night for Dallas. If he plays it will be interesting.

Game 7: Pens @ Flames

I will do the overall analysis closer to the game because I know Cheese will have made 17 trades between now and then and this experiment will be a useless gauge.

Game 8: Coyotes @ Pens
Forwards: Coyotes 64 vs Pens 68
Defense: Coyotes 66 vs Pens 69
Goalies: Coyotes 74 vs Pens 81

Quick has been great and the Coyotes have been the surprise team of the year. This will be a fun one to see how it plays out because we have the star power, but the Yotes are a prime example of chemistry in the sim.

Games 9 and 10: Pens vs Wild
Forwards: Pens 68 vs Wild 67
Defense: Pens 69 vs Wild 67
Goalies: Pens 81 vs Wild 78

This is going to be a great matchup as both teams matchup well against the other. Should be fun to see what happens when these teams meet in back to back games.

I will continue to update this thread as the games go on to see exactly what matchups worked and what ones didnt and try to see where chemistry comes into play over this stretch.

I have a feeling Nabokov's "can't win when it matters" rating is pretty high thats why you underperform.

Not a good start to this 10 game test, dropping a contest to the rebuilding Panthers in a SO. Jay Bouwmeester lasted all of 8:02 in his debut after getting ejected for a headbutt.

The game is pretty well summed up by this:

Penalty Shot by Sidney Crosby for Pittsburgh Penguins - Stopped by Antero Niittymaki
Penalty Shot by Alexander Ovechkin for Pittsburgh Penguins - Shot Misses the Net
Penalty Shot by Ilya Kovalchuk for Pittsburgh Penguins - Stopped by Antero Niittymaki
Penalty Shot by Teemu Selanne for Pittsburgh Penguins - Shot Misses the Net
Penalty Shot by Brian Gionta for Pittsburgh Penguins - Stopped by Antero Niittymaki
Penalty Shot by Bobby Ryan for Pittsburgh Penguins - Shot Misses the Net
Penalty Shot by Christian Ehrhoff for Pittsburgh Penguins - Shot Misses the Net

Horrible showing in the shootout by our best players.

Game two was a better result. A 5-3 win carried by the PP going 3-3 and Nabby stepping up huge with 44 saves. Hopefully the defense can play tighter in front of Price vs the Sens in game 3.

Game 3 was a solid example of what this team can do when it is rolling. We destroyed a Sens team that was pretty close to us ratings wise, but is drastically underachieving. The PP was the only aspect of the game that wasn't strong going 0-4 in the win.

I can't get my Power Play to work at all, I'm pretty sure it's the worst in the league. Doesn't seem to matter if I change sliders or players, it stays bad.

Another big win, this time against the Devils. This was our most dominate win of the season outscoring the Devs 5-0 and out shooting them 40-10. We also had a 4 fights. The PP struggled again going 0-6.
