Default Quebec speeder clocked at 240 km/h

Quote:
Quebec provincial police stopped a man driving 240 kilometres an hour on Montreal's Ville-Marie Expressway early Friday in one of the worst cases of speeding in Canadian history.

The car was caught on radar in a 70 km/h zone at 3 a.m. ET, and police stopped the BMW SUV just before it entered the tunnel.

Police spokeswoman Geneviève Bruneau said the 20-year-old man was sober and co-operated with authorities.

He was issued "a ticket of $2,598 and he also received 42 demerit points," and his licence has been suspended for six months, she said.

I know in my younger days I've driven that fast just to see how fast I can get my car going.
Definitely glad I never got caught!

The fastest known speeding ticket was issued in May 2003 in Texas. The driver was operating a Koenigseggs CCR, a super sports car made in Sweden, and was allegedly going 242 mph (389 km/hr) in a 75 mph zone. The driver was arrested and his sport car was towed.

That's really not that fast for how powerful cars are these days. I get the stupidity part, but the speed isn't surprising.

I still don't understand why vehicles need this much power, the Autobahn doesn't wrap around the globe.

A top speed of 150-160 Km/h is more than enough.

I've been in a 1.5L '95 Dodge Colt doing 220. The vibrations were shaking it to pieces. I should have padded her feet, but they didn't make Nikes in her size.

They don't, it's not about need. It's about pushing the limits of what's possible in automotive engineering.

These are street cars not race cars. I've never seen a maximum 200 sign in North America.

240mph is what? 160mph... What the hell kind of BMW SUV was this guy driving? Must have been a New X5M, 20 years old none the less. Sounds like some rich kid.

You could say that about pretty much every car then, as most have top speeds well beyond NA legal limits.
Seems like your issue should be more geared towards authorities that allow a car like the CCR to be street legal; than car companies who make fast cars.

Most cars are electronically limited to 180km/h. Makes you wonder why it isnt 120 or something if the max you can legally drive is 110

That varies based on the speed rating for the factory tires.

Well, we still need to be able to pass safely on the highway.

The driving code clearly states that you should never exceed the speed limit to pass someone. If you need to speed to pass than you shouldn't pass. According to the driving code.

Not my opinion, just telling you how it is.
