Habs fire Bergevin. Hire Jeff Gorton as executive vice president of hockey ops
https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/h...128-mgmtchange
Quote:
Geoff Molson, Owner, President, and Chief Executive Officer of the Club de hockey Canadien, has announced that Marc Bergevin, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Trevor Timmins, Assistant General Manager, as well as Paul Wilson, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications, have been relieved of their respective functions, effective immediately.
A process to recruit, as soon as possible, the team's next General Manager is under way. While the next General Manager will bring significant hockey expertise to the organization, an additional criterion of that person's role will be to communicate with fans in both French and English.
To assure the continuity of the day-to-day hockey operations during this process, Mr. Molson has retained the services of Jeff Gorton, who will serve as Executive Vice President, Hockey Operations.
"On behalf of myself and the organization, I wish to thank Marc Bergevin, Trevor Timmins, and Paul Wilson for their passion and engagement towards our Club over the last years. Their relentless work allowed our fans to experience many memorable moments, including last summer's playoff run that culminated with the Stanley Cup Final. We wish them all the success they deserve in the pursuit of their careers. I think, however, that the time has come for a leadership change within our hockey operations department that will bring a new vision and should allow our fans and partners to continue cheering for a championship team," said Geoff Molson.

From hero to zero pretty quickly.
Squeaking into the playoffs and going on a miracle run saved his job by only a few more months.
Pisses me off that he horded all those RWers and gave them mostly ####ty contracts.
I'd love any of Gallagher, Anderson, Tofolli or Armia on the Flames, but their contracts vary from poor to terrible, except for Tofolli maybe.

Gorton will have significant influence. Likely will be the brains behind the scenes.
How often is a Vice President hired before his boss?

? GM will likely report to Gorton. Similar to how Burke was in Calgary.
It allows the Habs to hire a less experienced GM with Gorton looking over their shoulder.
One rumored candidate is Patrick Roy.

Eric Engels suggested Luongo, Martin Madden Jr, Mathieu Darche, and Vincent Damphousse as candidates.

Roy has the sort of mercurial temper and ego that would get into a power struggle for ultimate control.

Or Anderson. It was long rumored Treliving had a strong interest in the player. I wouldn't be surprised if he looks to see what the new management has planned for him. Upcoming draft in Montreal, securing another 1st round pick might be appealing to them.

This is Gorton's show. The only reason he's not GM is because he doesn't speak French.

JA would be an interesting player under Sutter no doubt but his scoring touch died off considerably after firing out of a rocker and his contract is spooky. I wouldn’t hate adding him but Toffoli only has 2 years after this one and has history with Sutter, either way though we should definitely be circling that franchise to see about bolstering our top 6.

Pretty much what Friedman was hinting about last night.
Ducharme will be toast after the season, likely some deals for picks and prospects, and a fresh slate for a new GM and his coach.
Roy as GM seems like it would be a fiasco, so I'm hoping that's the hire.

As confirmed by many players, Hartley is a two-faced jerk.

If I could do Dube + Valimaki for Toffoli I would. I think that could really upgrade our team, and give MTL two good players/prospects.

Agreed, reasons to be interested in both. Anderson did score 17G last year though, just under a 25G pace. IIRC, he was one of three players in the league to hit 20G, 200 SOG, and 200 hits the last full season played. The other two? Coleman and Ovechkin. When Anderson is on, he is a beast. I am sure Treliving, and Sutter, would love to get their hands on him.
I don't mind Anderson at $5.5, but the term is a bit concerning, although he is two years younger than Toffoli. That said, the cap should be moving upward by then making it easier to stomach......I hope. Anderson has a M-NTC, but Toffoli has no movement restrictions. I would be happy with either as they both could check some boxes for the Flames. They both have term left, so I could see Treliving surrendering a first as part of the package.
