Default Movies Made in Alberta, or by Albertans

I was telling a colleague that FUBAR is the greatest movie ever made in Alberta, and it got me thinking, what other movies have been made in Alberta, or by Albertans? There's got to be lost lost classics.

Cool Runnings has to be up there, love that film.
Brokeback Mountain also highly underrated, plus it was filmed during the 04 run and made the director and actors fans of the Flames.

I think I was about 17 when Fubar came out, and I went to watch it in theater on the recommendation of a friend, we actively disliked what we were watching, and walked across the hall to the sum of all fears. Haven't really tried to watch it since. but it is and remains the only time I've ever done that.

Glancing at the list, Interstellar and X2 definitely jump out to me.

Investigating Alberta ghost towns a couple years ago brought me to the story of Rowley and the Rowleywood sign on the outskirts of the town.

Bye Bye Blues, a movie set in Alberta during WWII and co-starring Michael Ontkean (of Slap Shot and Twin Peaks fame), was filmed in Rowley, Alberta. I visited the site in 2022 and it has been preserved as a movie set, with many of the buildings constructed during production still standing.

Here's a recent article from the St. Albert Gazette: https://www.stalbertgazette.com/loca...y-tree-4483698

I think one of those new Ghost Buster movies was filmed in Alberta.

Legends of the Fall as well. The funny thing is that I heard they originally scouted Winnipeg and rural Manitoba as the location, but the City of Winnipeg wouldn't let them remove trees from some of the streets, even though they would later be replaced. Meanwhile, Alberta has gone on to become a pretty popular place to film stuff and Winnipeg not so much.

Waydowntown, I think this with the one where he lives in the +15 network and never goes outside? I've seen it.

Is TV not allowed? Because I loved 'Hell on Wheels.'

I even ran into Common and Anson Mount getting a drink and...as a good Star Trek fan does...asked them about working with Colm Meaney.

And as I've said before and shall re-iterate...Anson Mount is not an actor. He is genuinely that charming.

Well...that one goes without saying...you only hit up the East Village for one reason and that is getting 'Superman Wasted.'

I was on that show. It was filmed here.

Many things are filmed there. Shanghai Nights and Shanghai Noon being the notable ones I remember them talking about.

In my opinion, the 3 greatest movies to be shot in Alberta are:

Days of Heaven (Terrence Malick) 1978
Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood) 1991
Superman the Movie (Richard Donnor) 1978

If anyone hasn’t seen Days of Heaven I highly recommend it. Absolutely stunning movie shot at magic hour. In my top 5 movies of all time.

Clive Barker's Nightbreed, both shot in Calgary and Alberta as well as having the story based here. Even has the voice of Ed Whalen in it.
