LeBrun: Flames, Devils reignite Markstrom trade talks (again); other teams interested
Let's branch this off from the main trade speculation thread since there's enough smoke that a forthcoming trade is likely, whether it's with NJ or another team.

Hopefully we can keep it to one, instead of the three or four that were running leading up to the TDL
No dgibbs allowed!
I'll try to update with updates. Or a mod is welcome to do it.

Remap your keyboard so you can refresh with the Print Screen button. Nobody has ever used that damn silly thing, so it doesn't matter if you wear it out.
Then switch back to F5 once the trade is finished.

If Lebrun says it, it is legit.
I think at the deadline it was mainly speculation from people posting who may have some sources and were hearing bits of information here and there.

Trade may already be agreed upon. Just waiting for end of finals before announcing.

Conversely, if they're not going to announce a deal until after the finals, why close the deal early? See if any bidders get desperate in the next few days.

Based on the article Fitz seems to think 10 OA is worth a haul alone. As in.. markstrom is probably a throw-in rather than a centerpiece in a deal for it.
At least that's the impression I'm getting from his quote.
Personally, I think 28 + markstrom and a minor add is about bang on to move up to 10, and they would probably unload a contract in that transaction too.

Only thing that could make this dreadful Oilers run make me feel better about the Flames offseason is:
Markstorm for 10th overall + Mercer.
Yes won’t happen but that would make this cup run much easier to swallow as a Flames fan. C’mon Conroy, give us fans something to put our head up high for!

He should just grab 6.4 million dollar Gibson for the next 3 years and call it a deal. He seems to think there are like 5 good goalies available for him to pick from and he is the only GM looking for a goalie. Don’t think the Flames need to add anything to Markstrom if they are retaining 50% on the deal. If they are trading a 6 million dollar goalie they probably need to add a 2nd round pick.

It’s definitely not going to be Mercer and #10.
I think it’s more likely 10 and Holtz for Markstrom and #28 as NJD seem to still want a pick in the 1st.

Don't even think they'd get Holtz included but I'd like to be wrong about that.

Well Conroy needs to be a Warlock for this trade. I think we missed the boat but I thought we wouldn't get more than a 2nd rounder for Lindholm.... lol

When I put in 3 million cap relief X 2 years I get a 29th overall 1st round pick in return. Source: https://puckpedia.com/CapRelief
Markstrom's GSAA this year was top 10 in league which slipped from a much higher level pre-NJ trade noise in early March. His quality starts stopped almost completely after those rumors.
What are comparable trades of a starting goalie?
About the best you can hope for in a return for your starter, it seems, is a mid-to-high first round pick. A return like that could be great, or terrible. At the end of the day, it's an unknown commodity when you acquire it.

A 29th 1st round pick (retention value) and 17th 1st round pick = 10th overall per Source: https://puckpedia.com/pickvalue
Is Markstrom's unretained value a 17th overall equivalent?
Source: https://www.espn.com/nhl/insider/sto...best-2023-2024 (Feb 15, 2024 before trade deadline)
"His numbers are off the chart," a goaltending analyst said. "He's ahead of Demko, ahead of Hellebuyck, ahead of everyone." Maybe it's an oversight or carryover from last season's dud under coach Darryl Sutter. Whatever the case, the goalie who is second in the NHL is goals saved above expected (18.4) and building a Vezina case with a .916 save percentage...

If you retained 50% and also included the 28th pick the value of Markstrom is apparently only the 34th overall pick. If you had to add even more to it to get the great 10th overall pick Markstrom’s value would drop even more. The idea that Markstrom is almost worthless (which would be the scenario if you added even more than the Van pick) is laughable. The idea that he is worth marginally more than Jake Allen is also laughable. I don’t think you need to add anything if you are eating 3 million a year.
