I could use your help building holiday playlists for shows I am doing in December on CJSW (19th and 26th). I'm looking for songs that aren't too cliche, and not the usual standards. Generally, these will be Indie bands, with an emphasis on local and Canadian music. I'd love to see your requests!
So far I have found music from: Futureheads, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Prince, Jesus & Mary Chain, XTC, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, The New Pornographers, Raveonettes, Sloan, Bjork, Throwing Muses, Astral Swans, Ramblin' Ambassadors, The Evaporators, Belle & Sebastian, Ramones, Tegan and Sara, Kris Ellestad, etc.
Every year The Line of Best Fit blog puts out a free compilation of free Canadian Christmas music. Here is Volume 7 (and the others are easy to search for):
This one was a favourite of mine growing up and I still will admit I like it.
And I am sorry but the best version of The Christmas Song goes to Big Bird and Swedish Chef. The magic begins at 1:20.

Can't suggest an indie version, but for traditionals, I always find the Wexford Carol breathtaking. I'm kinda glad it isn't played more, so I'm always pleasantly surprised those rare times I hear it by chance.
I've always been partial to vocal-only versions of Carol of the Bells. There are a lot of versions, but here's Pentatonix doing a pretty decent version of it.

I haven't updated my Christmas playlist in years and have only listened to it once out of the last three Christmases. Doubt I'll listen to it this year either.

Taylor Swift's Silent Night is atrocious. Just, no.
