wranglers Mitch Love wins Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as AHL coach of the year

https://twitter.com/user/status/1648024021878075393

Also coached the Pacific Division at the 2023 AHL All-Star Classic (they won).

Love's Wranglers won the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the top team in the AHL this year.

Also, Love won the same award last year. Back-to-back.

He'll be a good head coach for some NHL team not named the Flames.

At least there's a bit of good news going on in this organization.

Definitely will get the chance sooner rather than later at the NHL level.

I for one am looking forward to our next Head Coach after Darryl Sutter - Jim Playfair!

Wait, what's this thread about?

If he wins the Calder Cup he might get hired by an NHL team as soon as this offseason.

Honestly the Flames really need to be pro-active here and think if they want to risk losing him for another 8-24 months of Sutter.

I wonder if Columbus regrets going with John Tortorella only to see Jared Bednar move to Colorado in the 2016 offseason...(although for them I guess at least they had 5 more seasons of Torts and made the playoffs 4 straight years).

Nothing would be more Flames than for another team to hire Mitch Love this offseason, and then the Flames end up firing Sutter in December after a bad start anyways.

No one's ever won more than twice, so there's that.

Is it a coincidence he won twice in a row and Wolf is goalie of the year twice in a row?

Flames better promote him before he jumps ship.

I don't know but if both of them could bring that magic to the big club, then sign me up.

I think it's a very fair point to make, although I'd also say this — Love's players love playing for him, and he was very successful with far less at his disposal with the Saskatoon Blades.

I don't doubt the Wranglers would probably find less success with a different goalie, but Love is a really good match for what they have going on in there. A ton of guys have taken huge steps under him this season (not to mention guys like Kirkland last year): Zary, Pelletier, Phillips, Duehr, Solovyov, Pettersen, Poirier, Klapka, Jones. It's a really good team from top to bottom with a ton of guys playing to (or above) their potential. I think there's only so much any coach can do, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone on this Wranglers team who has really struggled since Love took over.

I was looking at those Saskatoon Blades rosters the other day...he was squeezing a lot out of some pretty limited rosters.

The same type of coincidence where Sutter wins NHL coach of the year last season when Markstrom had a 0.922 save% and was a Vezina finalist, but this year everyone wants Sutter fired after Markstrom put up a 0.890 save percentage and wasn't even a top 50 goalie in the league.

A coach is only as good as their best goalie?

That's how Sutter got his cups after all...
