Kieffer Bellows on waivers. UPD: Claimed by Philly
Could see someone picking up the former 1st rounder. $1.2 mil AAV and RFA at the end of season

Unfortunately for Calgary even if they do put a claim on him I don’t think we’ll get him… but I’d still put a claim on him.

Still only 24. 19 points in 45 games last season (first full season in the NHL)

Even in the AHL he's got starting pitcher stats.
12-7 in his first full AHL season
22-9 in his second.
Not a complete player by any stretch. And not really good at the thing he's supposed to be good at (scoring goals).

With Ottawa having Norris go down I could see them putting a claim in; pretty sure Bellows and Tkachuk have international history together too.

Has he had injury troubles or just not able to stick in the lineup?

Actually don't want the Flames to put a claim in. That $1.2 mil in cap space could be used for a much more consistent player at the deadline.
Flames shouldn't be wasting cap space on reclamation projects this season.
Arizona or Chicago makes sense.

Maybe so... but the Flames also shouldn't have Lewis playing the minutes that he does. Any player of substance that we acquire is going to require us to move $$ out anyways... that being the case I'd rather we upgrade now. The games in the first half of the season count just the same as those in the last.
Not particularly advocating for Bellows here... just advocating for an upgrade sooner rather then later.

Very good point; I must have been trying to find a winger for Bennett still in my Flames fan mind lol!

Disagree.
If we upgrade now, we only have $2M or so to play with. If we wait until Jan or Feb, we will have $4-$6M to play with.
Yes, the games count for just as much now as later, but the Flames are going to make the playoffs, and challenge for the division lead regardless.
What matters is having the best team possible for the playoffs. And I think that means being patient, so that we can get a quality player closer to the deadline.

I agree with upgrading now rather than later while the team as a whole is still figuring it all out together; with Bellows he really is only of value in a top 6 role that would displace Dube and that just isn’t the case. Again I think my memory of him potting 9 in a WJC and thinking it’s still 3 years ago is what made me want to put a claim in but honestly I think he’d probably have a hard time displacing Lewis. Say what you want about Lewis and his offensive acumen and scoring point totals, he does all the X’s and O’s right and knows what his defensive responsibilities are which makes him invaluable to Sutter. I think the Flames need to land a player that pushes Dube down to Backs/Coleman duo and in turn Lewis down to sharing 4th line RW with Ritchie.

Bellows would have trouble cracking the lineup let alone playing in the top 6.
He has no place here.

Sure... but I still want an upgrade now. If that involves a money out move then so be it. Frankly, I think Ruzicka should get a shot at it but if they're determined to not play him then I think he should be traded or waived so someone more appropriate can come in and take a 3W position.

Cap space is very valuable. Using it now on a waiver claim, or anyone that chews that space up right now doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
As has been mentioned, the existing cap space is much more valuable closer to the deadline. The team is 5-1. We have no idea what injuries will occur or what the biggest hole will be before the playoffs. Keep that cash for much later on in the season, not need to spend it during the first month of the season while the team is playing great. Who knows what will happen in the future.

I'd rather the lineup have more depth. Depth protects you against injury, individual slumps, or regression from heaters. It's a hole in the teams line-up that could easily be filled (c'mon upgrading from Trevor Lewis isn't hard) so I'd rather fill that hole promptly.
Yes, We're 5-1... no I don't think the teams full season true talent level is a 68-14 season. That'd be real real nice but unrealistic.
