Boston College @ Minnesota -- LIVE on Big Ten Network : Oct 25 @ 6:00MT
Johnny Gaudreau, Billy Arnold and the rest of the 5th ranked Boston College Eagles are visiting the top-ranked University of Minnesota Golden Gophers for two games this weekend.
The first game goes tonight at 6:00 Mountain Time, and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network (Shaw 157 SD/232 HD, Telus 939?).
This is a rare chance to watch a couple of Flames College prospects on TV in Calgary. It should be a good game between two of top 5 teams in NCAA Division I hockey.
I figured I'd post a new thread since a lot of people might not read the prospects thread.

Didn't realize how big the rinks are - are all college rinks this size?

Great hands by Johnny. Picks it up off the boards and boom it's in the net.

No. It looks like there are 8 International sized rinks in the NCAA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._hockey_venues

Minnesota got an early 2-0 lead. Gaudreau scored a nice one bouncing it in off the goalie on a shot from behind the goal line. Then, BC got two more quick goals right after (no points for Gaudreau or Arnold) to take the 3-2 lead.

These boards are terrible. A puck could hit the boards, level to the ice, and bounce back 5 feet in the air.

Man, every time Johnny touches the puck, you expect him to score.

This is the most I've seen of JG since the WJC. The guy is just dominant in the NCAA, small size notwithstanding, generating scoring chances seemingly at will. I am convinced that his college career ends this spring, as there would be nothing to gain hockey wise from playing his senior year. Maybe not quite ready for the NHL, but definitely ready to turn pro.

I don't know if I'd call that a beauty, but a goal's a goal.

He's dynamic offensively, but jeez he seemed uninterested going backwards. He blew the zone 3 times with 2.5 minutes left leaving Arnold once and the d a couple times to fend for themselves only to have a scoring chance against.
But man he's good with the puck on his stick

Yeah, I didn't see a lot of backchecking, from Johnny or anyone else. Even Gaudreau will have to learn some defence, but that won't be until he turns pro, and I don't think he'll ever be a Selke candidate. Patrick Kane has developed into a fine two way player at the NHL level, and so can Johnny. I think he'll start in Abby, but I would love to be wrong about that.

Learning is one thing, but he wasn't even trying. It's one thing to blow a coverage, it's another to not bother.
Maybe I'm just being pessimistic

That probably has to do more with York wanting Gaudreau as an offensive threat than anything and leave the defense to his other linemates.
If you watched Gaudreau at the last development camp, he was excellent when he was on the defensive side of drills and easily frustrated a lot of guys by lifting their sticks, taking the puck and clearing the zone when they were least expecting it.

Gaudreau's lack of defence might be a symptom of BC losing some key guys to graduation. Maybe York is just trying to force more offence through Gaudreau now?

Yeah Gaudreau's defensive game is actually surprisingly good. He regularly steals pucks away in the neutral zone ala Datsyuk, and just relies on his smarts to anticipate plays.
My guess is either York has him pushing the offense or he has just gotten to the point where NCAA isn't challenging him any more.
Or maybe it was just this one game.
