Default Does anyone watch Bollywood movies?

I recently watched "3 Idiots", and have been looking for some good Hindi movies. It was in Hindi with English subtitles. A pretty good movie.

The boyfriend and I, just watched a British-Indian movie called "East is East", a pretty good movie. It takes place in the 70's in Manchester, England. It's about a Pakistani man married to a white British lady and they have 7 kids together. The movie is about balancing the two cultures, more so about instilling the Pakistani culture at home and how the kids struggle with picking one culture over the other.

I am also an admirer of Deepa Mehta's movies, she is a Canadian-Indian director, and many of you may know the movie called Water by her.

Thank you! I have seen all of those movies, and yes Ghajini was a rip off of Memento. I hear Memento is good, still have to watch that one. I haven't seen My name is Khan, yet.

Bollywood does copy many ideas from Hollywood, sometimes there are carbon copied plots and resembling dialogues, such as Partner. Partner I think was a rip off of Hitch with Will Smith and Eva Mendes. So many people loved that movie (relatives and friends who haven't watched Hitch), while I was mouthing every coming up dialogue in the scenes.

P.S. Note to others, Bollywood movies aren't THAT bad

Who cares if they are rip offs - the point is the acting is pretty damn good.

I enjoyed:
Short Kut
3 idiots is amazing
Dil Bole Hadippa - pretty funny.
Tare Zamane Pare (Aamir Khan is probably the best actor imo)

I haven't seen Short Kut... Dil Bole Haddipa was awesome only because of Rani Mukerji. I think I can say I have seen every single movie of Aamir Khan, since he makes one or two every year. I haven't seen Mangal Paandey though, suppose to be another good one. I think it is a historic movie.

The movies that I somewhat enjoyed:
Love Aaj Kal
Jaane tu.. ya jaane na
What's your Rashee
Kurbaan
New York
London Dreams
Vaada Raha .. there are many others..

The movie that I am confuse about is, No Smoking, which is apparently based on Stephen King's short story called Quitters' Inc. It's a very abstract movie, that Bollywood often doesn't makes. Have to re-watch it again to understand it.

For those who would prefer watching movies based on Indian culture/society or Non-Bollywood movie, I suggest:

The Namesake
Heaven on Earth
Brick Lane
East is East
Pink Ladoos
The Partition
Earth (which I think is a sequel to Fire)

I have an Indian buddy that made us watch a few famous Bollywood flicks and they were great. Lagaan (tax), Do your thing (translated) and I think Black was the name of the last one I saw, all very good movies.

Any movie by Shahrukh Khan is the best. In my opinion he is hands down the best actor in the world. Watch one of his classic movies Mohabbatein, Kabhie Khushi Khabi Gham, and my all time favorite kal ho naa ho and I gurantee most of you would agree.

My favorite actor are Abhisek Bachan, Akshay Kumar, Hitesh Deshmushk, and hands down in my opinion Aamir Khan is the best movie of all time.

As for the actresses hubba bubba hahahah they are all hot.

Slumdog Millionaire was pretty good; I've also heard that Bend it Like Beckhem is good, but I haven't seen that myself yet.

If you are looking for some really good moveis from a few years ago I would check out the following:

1. Khabie Kushi Khabie Ghum
2. Mohabbatein
3. Company

The first two are love stories... as much as I hate to say it, they were damn good movie! Company is about gangs in India which was really good. When I think of a few more I will post them.

Bend it like Beckham is pretty good ... has young Keira Knightly and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, when he was very skinny.

My girlfriend watches a ton of them. I'll ask her which ones are good. Sometimes I am 'forced' to watch them with her. I don't understand the language much so I just read the subtitles.

The ones I remember she loves are:

1. Pyaar Ke Side Effects
2. Race
3. Daddy Cool
4. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (I actually liked this one)

If you want to go see them in the theatre then check out Movie Dome. That's the only place in Calgary that regularly plays them (other than the main stream ones you can see at the bigger theatres).

If you want to buy the movies on DVD then private message me. There are a few places in the NE that sell them though I question the legality of the process.

Wow, I got some movies to catch up with . I haven't seen Pyar ke side effects and Daddy Cool.

There are some non-Bollywood movies I suggested above, you might like them too, since they are in English and you don't have to read subtitles. Some of them are on cultural conflicts and some are comedic.

How are you liking the dancing and the singing? Rab ne banadi jodi was a lot of dancing.
