Poppy Question...
So, I always wear a poppy on my coat for the entire month of November, but yesterday I had a veteran tell me that its disrespectful to wear it outside of the week of Remembrance Day and even moreso after Remembrance Day.
I feel the opposite, I wear it the whole month out of respect, am I wrong here?

According to the Legion, they are not supposed to be worn after November 11th.

I thought you were supposed to take it off.
But then again, I also read the thread title as "poopy question"...

At first I was offended as well, but then realized that you didn't say puppy.
While I've never worn my poppy past Nov 11th, this is the first time I've heard anyone suggest that you shouldn't. Kinda interesting.

A random quote...
http://www.canada.com/life/Proper+po...451/story.html
Veterans Affairs Canada says poppies can be worn from the beginning of the poppy drive, which this year was Oct. 30.
The annual campaign begins "on the last Friday of October and (poppies) can be worn at any time after that date," Veterans Affairs says on its website.
But it adds: "Although it is tradition for the poppy to be worn only during the annual Remembrance period, a person may wear a Poppy any time he or she wishes to do so."

I was always taught to take the poppy off at the end of November 11th.
I do respect that you want to show respect though.

I always take it off after November 11, I wouldn't be against someone still wearing one.
On a related note what do you do with your poppy after you take it off? It just seems so wrong to throw it away.

I stick mine into the roof of my car (the felty interior roof part). That way I'm never caught without one. I still end up putting money in the tubs though, whether I need one or not because it is obviously more about making a donation than re-using a poppy from last year. And, of course, I usually go through a couple of poppies each year because they fall off, etc. Generally I take mine off after November 11th.

Aren't people supposed to place their poppies on the cenotaph (or equivalent) wherever they attend Remembrance Day service after it's over? In Ottawa, everyone places them on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

I picked one up off of the ground because I didn't want to see it trampled. The thing was wrecked already, and putting it in the garbage felt dirty and disrespectful. But it really was wrecked and beyond saving.
On a similar topic, I noticed that all of the English soccer teams had poppies on their jerseys for Remembrance Day (and the week or two prior). It would be nice to see the NHL teams do the same. Granted, the poppy tradition isn't the same in the US as it is in Canada, but even if the Canadian-based teams did it, it would be a nice little sign of respect.

Same. I've had the same one from my grandfather's funeral (a WWII vet) for the past 10yrs. My way of remembering him.

I believe that's a relatively new tradition (within the last 10 years or so). But a great one. The imagery of all of those poppies is amazing.

I put it in front of the Cenotaph or on it as I'm leaving whatever ceremony I attend.
