Free/Cheap Firewood

I must delve into CP's infinite knowledge once again.

I know there was a thread on here about cheap firewood from years ago, but instead of reviving the thread, I figured I'd just start a new one.

The organization that I work for goes out camping multiple times with our youth over the summer, and we're always looking for ways to cut costs (as much as we can cut costs anyway).

Anybody know where one can get free/cheap firewood in and around the Calgary area?

I drive by a smaller tree removal company everyday and always see a ton of firewood piled up and tarped up against their house. Far more then anything you'd use for personal use and I believe they were trying to give it away a couple weeks ago with a sign in the alley.

I'll try to grab a number off their truck and maybe you could give them a call and see if they would be willing to give you guys some.

If it's for a charity/organization, might be an idea to call some tree removal places and see if they would be willing to donate firewood to the group as well. They can write it off as a corporate donation, you get the firewood.

If you are driving along any rural road that has a new powerline construction project. If the landowners don't want the wood it is usually bucked up and stacked in the ditches.

Yeah, there was a thread earlier where someone mentioned you can pay to get a permit to go on to crown land and get some wood. If I remember correctly the permit was like $5. The CPer that mentioned it said he just makes a day of it and brings back
a truckload.

For his purposes, he will want wood that has already been dried.

Green wood is not the best for burning so not sure about getting a forest tag and cutting down fresh trees, unless he has the space to cut and dry and store it.

That is true. I just figured if the organization does it this summer then they will not have to worry about wood for next year.

5 buck permit and you can go out and fill your truck with dead trees not live. Burns great right away if you pick them well. We just got a load last weekend and do it quite often. We also just camp up out that way and knock down a good dry dead one or 2 for the weekends.

After reading the FAQs you are right. I just assumed cutting down trees would be mean they were alive. This is definitely the way to go then.

Does Pallet wood work? The Can Tire on Richmond Road always has some out back with a sign that says free firewood....

Pallet wood would be your best bet except that it burns really fast and i would not want to cook over it.

Who knows what kinds of chemicals had been spilled on the wood during its life as a pallet.

I vote for the 5$ permit and crown land.

A lot of places won't let you burn pallets due to all the nails. It would also burn real fast too so better have lots.

Give me a call at my company line. 403-243-5720 (Not sure I can post that number but I guess we'll see) I own a lumber yard and we have a free fire wood bin. Most of the summer it's full of wood so come on down and load up. My name is Tyler and I work at the Cedar Shop. We always have fire wood that you can take.

I got a whack of pine if still interested..big trunks cut but you will have to split.
