Interesting comments from a kid playing so close to Calgary. Now this could and probably is minor news right now, but I would think this kind of decision shows how vital it could and can be to show players via your actions as an organization, that you truly develop from within and give players every chance to succeed by giving them more than a sniff when ready, proof being he decided on Colorado (because they offerred and NHL contract...exactly the point)
If a guy like Armstrong doesn't get a chance, or say Van Der Gulik does well in Colorado (a player who Darryl said is NHL ready in spring 2009)...It just seems like a waste that we don't at least give the players more of a shot for no other reason than they could make good trade bait in the future, and no better reason than they offer a major discount on cap space for the few indeficiencies they may still have that could be remedied with on the job training in the early season, so it and the cap don't effect your franchise late in the season. (Don't get me wrong, Van Der Gulik is out depthed here, but he helps make a point. Which the Flames org. is more than aware of with the rash of off ice signing they have made this summer, now if we could only 'SIM' forward to see the results.. : )
Playing prospects takes faith, but when developed well within a
consistant system, the gamble turns into a mitigated risk...Here is to hoping and believing, that the Flames Franchise will begin going in this direction more and more.
Would keeping a position on the 3rd line only for prospects be a good rule of thumb..? Darryl did say he wanted to inject a couple of prospects each year, as late as last year...It takes faith to do this. especially when your GM life hangs in the balance, maybe this is John's year, wouldn't bet on it, but still cannot wait to see. Don't know what it is, but seeing a prospect(s) fluorish is very satisfying, even if his numbers are less than a Vet, good for moral for both the team - young energy, and the fans - continued hope for the future.
