Default Avs prospect courted by Flames, sticks with Avs

http://www.medicinehatnews.com/story...ontract-season

This isn't huge news, but it's somewhat interesting.

20 year-old Colorado Avalanche prospect Wacey Hamilton - playing as an over ager for the Medicine Hat Tigers in this upcoming season - was offered a contract by the Calgary Flames. He turned it down, heeding the advice of his agent, "Be patient. Colorado, they do want to sign (you) to an NHL contract. They are not going to do it right away."

5'11" 177lbs but Tigers MVP last season with 71 points in 67 games. Flames snooping around for offence.

Link doesn't work anymore so how is this even allowed? why are the Flames talking to him if he's Avs property?

He wasn't Avs property at the time.

Flames offered him a contract first. His agent told him not to sign because the Avalanche would be offering him a contract instead.

He used to be Avs property, but they didn't sign him and he is now a free agent. He apparently still feels loyal to the Avs though.

Looks like he was undrafted, but the Avs have been scouting/courting him over the last year. The Flames offered him an AHL contract, but his agent told him to hold out for an NHL offer from the Avs.

Calling him an "Avs prospect" is like calling Nyren a Flames prospect.

I stand corrected.

Funny how he feels loyal to them without anything but talk. So much for "talk is cheap"!

This could be a guy they may sign if they move out a contract, etc
If his agent is getting interest from a team for an NHL contract, he is better serving the players interests to try to secure that contract rather than jumping at an AHL deal that may be seen as an affront to getting this NHL deal that may have been "promised"

Ten years from now, he'll be telling some chicks in Fort Mac bar about how he was really close to getting signed by an NHL team.

Not just talk, he feels he'll have a better chance in Colorado, knowing the Flames penchant for veterans.

Interesting comments from a kid playing so close to Calgary. Now this could and probably is minor news right now, but I would think this kind of decision shows how vital it could and can be to show players via your actions as an organization, that you truly develop from within and give players every chance to succeed by giving them more than a sniff when ready, proof being he decided on Colorado (because they offerred and NHL contract...exactly the point)

If a guy like Armstrong doesn't get a chance, or say Van Der Gulik does well in Colorado (a player who Darryl said is NHL ready in spring 2009)...It just seems like a waste that we don't at least give the players more of a shot for no other reason than they could make good trade bait in the future, and no better reason than they offer a major discount on cap space for the few indeficiencies they may still have that could be remedied with on the job training in the early season, so it and the cap don't effect your franchise late in the season. (Don't get me wrong, Van Der Gulik is out depthed here, but he helps make a point. Which the Flames org. is more than aware of with the rash of off ice signing they have made this summer, now if we could only 'SIM' forward to see the results.. : )

Playing prospects takes faith, but when developed well within a consistant system, the gamble turns into a mitigated risk...Here is to hoping and believing, that the Flames Franchise will begin going in this direction more and more.

Would keeping a position on the 3rd line only for prospects be a good rule of thumb..? Darryl did say he wanted to inject a couple of prospects each year, as late as last year...It takes faith to do this. especially when your GM life hangs in the balance, maybe this is John's year, wouldn't bet on it, but still cannot wait to see. Don't know what it is, but seeing a prospect(s) fluorish is very satisfying, even if his numbers are less than a Vet, good for moral for both the team - young energy, and the fans - continued hope for the future.

He's 100% correct, of course. He would have no chance with the Flames as they're currently being run. Even an exceptional free agent signing like Mark Giordano had significant hurdles and challenges getting anywhere in the Flames organization.

Not that it's impossible, it's just way easier in Colorado to get an opportunity.

meh... Flames signed Bryan Cameron. He got a pretty sweet deal (which indicates there must have been a bidding war of some sort). Second-rounder money for an undrafted player.

Not that Bryan Cameron is going to turn into a superstar, but it's not like these young players are shunning the Flames altogether.

Cameron wasn't undrafted. He was a 3rd rounder from 2007. LA just didn't sign him due to the contract limit and/or didn't see enough potential to warrant signing him instead of one of their numerous other prospects.

w/e though. Their loss is Sutter's gain.

Point taken, although technically he was passed over when he re-entered the draft at age 20.
