You don't need an air brake endorsement for a non air brake truck.
Quote:
In Alberta, you are not required to hold an air brake endorsement if
operating a single motor vehicle registered as a farm vehicle. However, you
do need an air brake endorsement if driving a farm vehicle combination
that requires the driver to hold a Class 1 operator’s licence. When applying
for a Class 1 operator’s licence, you will need to show proof of your air
brake qualifications, even if the vehicle you will be driving is registered as a
farm vehicle.

I looked for the GVWR requirements for air brakes but couldn't find.
My thinking is that there are not many tandem trucks without air.
I would recommend just getting it.

I agree. It only takes a day and then you will be good to go on all tandem axle trucks.

Ah okay. I'll take the official transportation site for their word then.
Class 3 farm vehicle you don't need air brake endorsement, but Class 1 farm vehicle you do.
I'll get the air brake endorsement eventually, but for now I'll just get my class 3 license. On a bit of a timeline here.

When I got my class 3 I had to get the air brakes as well as all the trucks I was looking at driving used them.
Air brakes were incredibly easy to get certified for...took an afternoon if I remember. A quick run down by somebody, followed by a quick review, followed by an extremely simple multiple choice quiz on what you just listened to.

Yeah I'll get it for sure. But because I don't need it to drive a Class 3 farm vehicle with air brakes, I don't need to rush.
Either way if I'm going to get my Class 1 I'll need it so might as well go for it.

Most places in Calgary make it a full 8 hour course, but I'm pretty sure that's just so they can charge more for it. When I was done I remember thinking "Man, this could've been accomplished in a bout 2 or 3 hours".

Prepare to be bored to death in there. It honestly felt longer than the most boring day of work I've ever had. "Okay, here's how an air brake system works.....and now I'll just repeat what I just said over an over with slightly different words each time, so that we can justify how much we're charging you guys".

And with that air brake ticket you can legally haul 63,500 kg in the mountains.
BC air is a very in depth course that saves lives, occasionally more govt. regulation is needed.
