Default 16YO trying to sail around the world, found alive with boat disabled, rescue on

Quote:
Abby Sunderland, 16, who is attempting to become the youngest sailor ever to circumnavigate the globe, was feared lost at sea today after her crew lost contact with her boat.

EDIT:

Quote:
"Abby is in very good spirits," said Will Blackshaw, leader of an airborne crew from Australia that made brief radio contact with Sunderland about 2 a.m. ET. "She's obviously keen to have some assistance, but she is in very good spirits."
Help is expected to arrive some time after midnight.

Maybe she's getting it on with her sailing teacher...

You could say she is all washed up.

But seriously, why on earth would you let a 16 year old do this by herself? insane

All jokes aside, I'd probably let her try if it was my kid.

I applaud the parents for letting her try. In today's society of sheltering the heck out of kids, it's great to see that some parents are still doing it right - by listening to what their kid wants, and going through the proper safety procedures so that they can learn something by themselves.

Hopefully this does not end in tragedy. She knew enough to know when she was hooped by manually activating the distress beacons, so hopefully she can just hold on until they get her out.

Terrifying, but if she is as competent as she probably is, I bet she is fine.

I sure hope so anyways.

This 16 year-old Australian girl completed her solo circumnavigation in May.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outp...05/global.html

Probably the most famous circumnavigation by a teenager was Robin Graham in Dove, chronicled in National Geographic through different issues in the 1960's. He was just 16 when he set out. It was mesmerizing reading at the time.

I hope the young lady in question is fine but this has been done before. That doesn't mean it SHOULD be done. It seems pretty reckless for the age.

She would be the youngest if she succeeds.

There's a chart near the bottom of this page.

she didn't exceed this was on 20 20 lats week or 60 mins one of those shows. Her boat broke down in south africa. So there is no way for her to beat the record since she stopped.

How do you people not see sailing the world as a good record? It would be quite incredible the things you get to see.

**edit I guess she would still be youngest to do it. But stopping defeats the whole point of trying***
