Sterilizing against faerie rings?

I have to use equipment to dig out some faerie rings. Once I dig these suckers out, does anyone know how I can sterilize the equipment so I don't spread this stuff around? Does a bleach-and-water solution do it? I'm talking about the bucket and wheels of a bobcat plus shovels or whatever touched the spores, etc. Is there any time when these things are dormant?

To prevent spread of this fungus to other areas of your lawn, make sure that you disinfect your gardening tools with a solution of household bleach or Lysol containing chlorine after treating your fairy ring affected areas. Make sure you water the affected area thoroughly then apply a high nitrogen fertilizer (for example a 20-3-4) to the affected area.

One final alternative is to dig the fairy ring out. Keep in mind that the grass and soil must be removed from a distance of 12 inches away from the outside and edge of the ring and 12 - 18 inches deep. Take care not to spill any of this affected soil as you do not wish to infect another area of your lawn. Make sure you clean your tools thoroughly after this procedure has been completed.

Fairy rings also occupy a prominent place in European folklore as the location of gateways into elfin kingdoms, or places where elves gather and dance. According to the folklore, a fairy ring appears when a fairy, pixie, or elf appear. Once a ring has appeared, it will disappear without a trace in under five days, but if you wait long enough for the elf to return to the ring, you may be able to capture it.

I would definitely hold out for the elf if possible.

Fun Fact: My grandfather invented something that gets rid of fairy rings. It was like a pitch fork that connects to a hose that waters the ring from underneath. I have no idea about the science behind why it works but it did...

You have to check, do a spore test, but generally yes, there feckin lovely sauteed in a bit of butter and garlic.

Bleach will kill pretty much anything. As far as eating it, only do it it you're absolutely sure you have the right species. Lots of edible mushrooms have inedible lookalikes.

While I wouldn't disagree in principle people are way more worried about mushrooms than they need to be, they aren't hard to identify, I'm sure there's a few mushroom clubs in Calgary that will help if you ask, on top of that even eating an inedible mushroom is most likely to give you a bad dose of the runs and maybe a weird trip. Some people pay for that!

Sure...and some may actually kill you. I think that's worth worrying about, even if the odds are you'll "only" get sick. It's important to know what you're doing first.

The Mushroom Council urges the public to be extremely cautious when foraging for wild mushrooms outside, especially in fields and forests, because of potential health dangers that can be caused by some wild varieties [sic]… The untrained and uneducated person can make an innocent mistake when hunting wild mushrooms that could result in illness or even death… Commercially produced mushrooms that are in your supermarket or in prepared foods are carefully cultivated agricultural products, grown year around.
