Did anyone else catch the extended commercial they had for "The Contender" during the Apprentice last night? I must say, the show looks like a winner. It seems to have alot of the characteristics as to why the Rocky movies were so good, it isn't about boxing, it is about the people and their stories.
Anyone else going to watch it this monday? ( I think monday)

Wasn't this show on last year for about one episode? Did it get cancelled, retooled?

I beleive Fox had a boxing show that didn't work out, I don't think it was this one.

Yeah. That was a show called "The Next Great Champ" or something like that. Rushed into production to get ahead of The Contendor. Watched half an eppy of it - booooring.
But I'll watch this. With Burnett at the healm it promises to be good.

I think I will watch it.
Hopefully it will be much better than the Fox show.
With Burnett at the helm I would assuem that it should work out well.

Didn't one of the participants commit suicide the other day? Not trying to play spoiler, it was widely reported in the news. Just not sure if this was the program.

I don't know, the whole story around the suicide of one of the competitors only weeks after the show is enough to turn me off. I would feel too uncomfortable watching it.

Having watched the first part of the show the first thing that you notice and which bodes well for this shwo compared to the other one is that these guys are real fighters. They have a chance to win this show and then go on to beat someone big. To actually become champ at some point possibly. The fighters in the other show were second rate guys that would have been killed by real fighters today.

Overall I liked it.
The actual fight itself was great - didn't enjoy the rest of the show that much but the climax was quite well done.
The biggest difference I noticed was the difference in overall production value. The music, camera shots, etc were all superior in this show than in "The Next Great Champ". Burnett knows how to do his thing.
The press conference was stoopid though.

It was a farly decent show! Even my wife who HATES the sweet science watched it all, and enjoyed the last boxing scenes.
The guy who committed suicide was....Najai Turpin
Burnett said there were signs that Turpin's rough surroundings had taken a toll: He wouldn't sleep in his bed while the series was taping because he was used to sleeping under his bed or in his closet for fear of bullets or burglars.

I liked the show a lot EXCEPT the boxing finale. I am a huge boxing fan though, so I don't imagine it was set up to appeal to me. The editing destroyed any sense of flow in the fight, and the constant crowd shots drove me bananas.

THe constant blaring of the Brass section playing "Gladiator" music drove me nuts. Use it sparingly guys.

Not to mention the dubbed in crowd noise. Kinda reminded me of an old Spiderman cartoon with the short sound loops.
Other than that I kind of enjoyed the show. I'll watch it again.

I have to admit, I did enjoy it. Except the others who pointed out that the heavy editing of the final fight ruined it.
They spent too much time focusing on angry stares, or looks of fear. You never got a sense that it was a real fight.
It didn't look like either of these two guys had any kind of knock out power at all.
They need to do this show with ranked heavy weights, and have Mike Tyson as the special super secret final opponent.
