Default Audio Quality

Just wondering how to get the best quality for a sound system. Basically what I what to know is how to connect everything to the receiver. Currently I am using optical cable straight from my ps3 to my receiver and then a hdmi to connect the video to my tv. Would I get a better connection by using the hdmi to the receiver and then connect the receiver to the tv with another hdmi connection. If it matters the only thing that I have set-up is a ps3(no cable or anything else)

Kind of depends.. does your receiver support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD?

Actually here's an article that goes into some detail:

Does not support either. Has 7.1 set-up with Dolby digital ex/pro logic11x. This here is the exact model...

Yeah HDMI would probably be better, since I think the PS3 can decode TrueHD and DTS-HD and send the audio over the HDMI, whereas with the optical you wouldn't be able to get that.
