Breaking News - Kane Sent Packing
Breaking News: Eh Oh Canada Go News
Patrick Kane's stay with the Columbus Blue Jackets was short lived as he has been traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. Details are sketchy but the deal broke down as follows:
To Philly: Patrick Kane
To Columbus: Tomas Vanek, Ryan Whitney, 1st(det) 2010

Heavy price to pay but with Kane having a career year, us having an extra dman and boatload of 1st rounders, I needed to make this deal.
This deal will also provide some much needed cap relief for next year.
Vanek and Whitney were both playing well in philly but been afraid to make a trade and this was no different.
Good luck to Vanek and Whitney in Columbus.

Nice work guys. Way to get full value + more for Kane.
With Kane's contract at 1.35 for the next 3 years I can see why the Flyers paid the price. top 3 contract in the CPHL by far.

5 reasons why this is a bad deal for Columbus
1. The most important player in the deal; Vanek, is having a lousy year. Only 11 goals in 36 games. Has to get seriously hot just to hit 30.
2. Ryan Whitney is good, but won't be great. If I'm trading a player like Kane who makes almost nothing in salary, I would have demanded Erik Johnson.
3. Took on almost 8 million dollars. Obviously the Flyers gave cheese money for this year, but that's going to cause trouble next summer with all the deadwood that has to be bought out. Also Vanek needs a new contract this summer. If he actually does bounce back and kept the same OV rating he has now, he costs 6.5, 7 or 7.5.
4. There were better draft picks available.
5. You traded Patrick Kane, a 70 OV player on an entry level deal, you automatically lose for not keeping and building around him.

Reasons 1 and 3, this could be a blessing for the jackets, him having a lousy year, get him on a good deal, hes shown what hes capable of and he will turn it around.
Reason 2, EJ is not moving
Reason 4, he had the option of choosing wings, oilers, flyers, blues pick. The bruins and leafs picks were not made available, he tired though.
Reason 5, its actually fun making a trade and trying to improve your team. Not everyone has a team full of future hall of famers.

have you seen me build a team before? Waiting and building arond one player takes too long. I will build a good team and won't need Kane to do it. You'll see.

Seriously? I can't expect anyone will trade with you if those are your demands, they're insane. Erik Johnson and Patrick Kane are pretty close to equals as players. In the SIM Kane may have more value given that he's a forward who's pretty much close to his peak rating.
Columbus is close to the playoff mix and they instantly gained a similar rated forward, a guy who'll be a top 3 defenceman for them, plus the pick. Not everyone of us treat these teams as a decade long pet project, so trying to win now is worth it.
Flyers pay a pretty good price to get Kane, but they can afford it. Jackets move out the best long term asset, but gain back depth that they did lack.

It was only a matter of time until Dave pulled the trigger on a big deal. Yeah he has made a couple of other deals but this is the type of deal that Dave loves to make, and Dave well done once again!

I like this more for the Jackets. Cap is worth something but not this much. Vanek is a star player, Whitney is a good Dman who can score which is more valuable in the sim. A 1st to add also is great.
Kane has a great contract but besides that Im not sure he is much better then Vanek in the sim. Add on top of that Whitney and a 1st and I think the Jackets made out well by selling Kane to someone who really cares about the name.

I can shed a bit of light on this trade now that it is not 2AM. The reason for the deal is very simple. I have always been a big fan of Vanek and everyone knows what he is capable of.
Is he playing up to par in the NHL this year? NO
If he was, would I get Whitney and a 1st included with him in the deal? NO
The bottom line is that I am taking advantage of Vanek's poor NHL play to make a deal here. I will hope that he steps it up eventually and I think he will.
I build a team by selling off my best assets to obtain more, in most cases in a 2-1 deal.
Overall I think it is a good deal and the trade talks went very well.

Great job GMs... I love watching teams like the Jackets rebuild / retool.
As for the trade I am betting the Jackets GM is looking to obtain assets that have value. He will take each piece and trade them again and again and again.
