Default Caribbean: How Do You Say It?

I saw Money Guy post this in a different thread: Caribbean.

It got me to thinking, seeing as how it's been a slow Monday. There's two common ways to pronounce it.

One seems to be a bit quicker, and is pronounced Ca-rib-E-in. The other is a little more drawn out, Care-ah-bee-in.

Which way do you use? Is there one way to use for one reference, and the other for another?

It's always bothered me, and I've never known which way I should use, or if it really matters.

Discuss...

The region was named for the native Carib indians, so Ca-rib-E-in seems more correct to me.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Caribbean

Pronunciation: \ˌker-ə-ˈbē-ən, ˌka-rə-, kə-ˈri-bē-ən\

I call the region the Ca-rib-E-in .
I call the body of water the Care-ah-bee-in Sea.

I have no idea why though.

Except I'm pretty sure that Carib is pronounced care-ib, not cah-rib, so wouldn't the proper pronunciation be care-ib-EE-an? That's how I pronounce it.

That's a weird coincidence. We were out for a NYE party and the UFC party on Saturday night and everyone was asking my wife and I where we were going for our honeymoon next month. We are going on a Caribean Cruise but I was telling everyone...

"We're not sure yet. Either the Ca-rib-E-in cruise or Care-ah-bee-in cruise"

I didn't know what to call our cruise, but I guess we are going on a Ca-rib-E-in cruise.

Exactly.

Saying Car-ah-bee-in would be like calling yourself a Can-ah-dee-in.

I'd actually go with Care-ah-bee-in Cruise and the Region Ca-rib-Bee-in.

I thought I'd check Dictionary.com for help.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Caribbean

Waste of time.

I'll go with the Billy Ocean pronunciation. They're both wrong; it's Care-a-byoon.

went to school with someone from Jamaica. She was adamant that it was Ca-rib-E-in. That's what I use.

I say it the care... way. This seems more like what I'd expect locals to say.
Ca-rib-ian seems like the Americanized way based on accents.

Actually, it's the Caribbean way to say it. My family is from Trinidad and everyone pronounces it with the 'kah' rather than the 'care', the latter sounds like such a 'white American tourist wearing socks with sandals' way of saying it. The only family member I have ever heard pronounce it 'care' was part Guyanese and born here in the UK, since the British butcher foreign languages and words he is wrong by default and it should be pronounced the 'kah' way.
