Default Plugging in Cars.

I stole an extension cord from Jolinker a little while ago and have been using it ever since. I'm going to be out of town for 16 days. Is it okay if I plugged in my car for the entire time so it's not dead when I come back or is it bad for my engine. I've asked a couple of my buddies, but they are pretty split as to what to do.

TIA!!!

Why don't you use a timer and set it to turn on a couple times a day for a couple hours? Leaving it on the whole time would use up quite a bit of power.
Can someone plug it in for you before you get back?

(Asking Jolinar is probably not a good idea)

I don't have a timer and I'm parking it at the airport.

Giant waste of power. Only if you are driving somewhere immediately upon retrning and the weather is -50 outside, plug it in for a couple of hours.

Wait...actually...heres my pet peeve...what is it you all think a block heater does? I'm curious to know...not necessarily the OP here, but the way people talk about plugging in their cars being necessary for it to start in even mild winter weather...what exactly do you think it does? I know what it does having installed...well hundreds of them in brand new vehicles. And for the record I never plug my truck in.

Chances are the plug-ins at the airport or at an airport park and ride place have timers anyway.

They don't want you drawing power 24hrs a day either.

There's you answer right there. If it's on a timer it will keep your engine from becoming super cold and you don't have to pay for the power!!

I say plug it in!!

Are you sure they have plug-ins where your parking??

It won't be bad for your engine to be plugged in the entire time...it'll just be a nice toasty warm engine that's wasting electricity the entire time.

Once you see what oil looks like @ -30, you'll plug your vehicle in...

If you park with one of the pay to park companys I'm sure they would boost your car for you if needed. One will even warm up your car, clean it off and drive it to the door when your flight arrives.

In Winnipeg it was normal to have 2 weeks of -30 in January. A lot of vehicles weren't plugged in. I still remember the loud engines and squealing motor for the first 20 seconds or so of starting them up. The ones that were plugged in seemed to fare a little better. Still I wouldn't plug it in at the airport. When is the last time it was colder than -10 when you were starting your engine here? If you're worried about your battery, it won't lose half it's power till the temps drop below -18.
