Default What kind of spider is this?

I found this creepy bugger under my cat's bed. Anybody know what it is? The was pretty well blood red all over, especially the legs. He met his end in the belly of my vacuum cleaner.

You need to vacuum those baseboards.

What the hell. You need to do more than vacuum. You need to burn your house down. Imagine because you didn't burn your house down, Calgary became infested with those things. Think about the woman and children. Think about your life. Think about your conscience in a few years. Do it.

When you go to empty your vacuum, the inside will be crawling with millions of spiders.

You better hope that's not a Brown Recluse! But I don't think they're in Alberta... As far as I know...

Anything like that?

In that case, fire is probably not ideal. The fire would probably last a few months.

We should exterminate all spiders.

Perhaps it's the The Red Legged Purseweb spider?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphodros_rufipes

Seems awefully north to be one of those, yet the picture seems similar, and the webbing would be in line with what the article says.

I just did a quick google search and stumbled upon that. I honestly have no idea.

I wouldn't have vacuumed it, I would have beaten it senseless with a size 10 Doc Martin

A poisonous one...

In all seriousness, it does look a tiny bit like the Brown Recluse, but I thought they lived more in wild areas. I saw one that looked a lot like that in my house last year. Could be something scary, could be something harmless.

Arachnophobia, or even just a dislike of spiders is one of the most common human fears. It's probably a natural evolution hang on instinct telling us to be careful and play nice with species like those. But spiders themselves are VERY passive, and there is no real reason to be afraid. Millions of other ways that people are more likely to die than a spider bite.

I know that doesn't help much... but I've found it to be true.

It's probably a Hobo spider. Brown Recluse spiders look similar, but aren't supposed to be this far north.
