Icon45 The Face Of The Maple Leafs Has Changed

HELL HATH FROZEN OVER...

After years of pestering Goffie, a major blockbuster was reached that not only get's the GM of Maple Leafs their favourite player, it actually makes the Penguins a big time player for the CPHL Championship.

To Toronto:
Alexander Ovechkin
Martin St. Louis
Jaroslav Halak
Kevin Klein

To Pittsburgh:
Henrik Lundqvist
Olli Jokinen
Marc-Edward Vlassic
Alexander Frolov
Oscar Mollar
Cap Considerations

The Leafs aren't quite where they need to be to challenge for the cup... especially now, moving a true #1 goalie out, but we couldn't pass up the chance to bring in Ovie.

Flame away...

Pens will win the Cup. Robs draft picks keep gaining value by the day!

In seriousness, always tough to pick a winner in a deal involving AO. I really like this for the Pens just because it is exactly what they needed to make the team the #1 contender in the entire CPHL. One move propels the Pens to easy cup favorites now. As for the leafs, it is great getting AO but Lundy was a top 2 goaltender so that hurts. You also lost a lot of other youth (Moller, Vlasic) so it will be interesting to see where the team goes from here.

Who the hell is going to play goal for the Leafs now?

I love this move for Pittsburgh.

I am also curious who is going to play goal for the Leafs, its a huge trade but this move leaves a large hole in the goalie position

Pittsburgh is the team to beat in the entire CPHL. I think Toronto gave up one too many roster players in the move.

Ovechkin and St Louis in up front but Jokinen, Frolov, Moller out.

Klein in but Vlasic out on defense.

Halak in and Lundqvist out.

In the CPHL i'd rather have Lundqvist then Ovechkin. Goalies are extremely tough to find.

Ovechkin was obviously a guy we didn't want to move and to be totally honest didn't think i would ever have to move. We liked our depth in all areas, loved the prospects we had coming in and only saw one hole in our team. That was in net and for this season alone. I felt price could get the job done enough to propel us to the playoffs and even home ice advantage. However I didn't think that he could win us the cup. Ever since my visit to the cup finals 3 seasons ago I wanted more. I built the team to win and each of the last two years we didn't get the job done.

My original plan was to watch teams fall out deal a few nice prospects for a veteran stop gap goalie and then use him for one year until Price is ready. However we feel that with this deal we gain a top 3 goalie in the world. Lundqvist is something Pittsburgh has not had since I was a GM. He is a step up on Nabby who is awesome, but couldn't do the job for us, and about 10 steps up from everyone else we ever had.

Ovechkin was supposed to stay, but we didn't feel we could compete with teams like Montreal and Philly to name a couple in a 7 game series without having a star goalie. I told Rob that Ovechkin was not going anywhere unless I instantly became a cup favorite. I think this deal does it.

I don't like this deal for Pittsburgh because it makes the Eastern Conference that much tougher. I figured the Pens would address their tender, and IMO solidified it for years to come. Yeah, you had to move AO but this was a great trade for the Pens IMO. Like Neil said, one too many assets were put on the move.

Did I have to give up so much if anyone else had Ovechkin... Maybe, maybe not. Did goffie lay out his price? Yes. Was I willing to pay it in order to get Ovie. I understood the price, and payed.

The only downside to this deal as far as I'm concerned is the goffie is is my division, and that'll suck a little.

The truth is, I highly doubt a guy like Ovechkin would have been available for what everyone would think was a even deal.

You got your man, move on and build around him and forget about what the price was. As I see it, thats what the price was and is

I like this deal for both teams EXCEPT for the whole Lunqvist part of it.

Lundqvist >>>>>>>>> Halak

If this was Price going the other way it would make much more sense because of the potential. Lundqvist is a top 5 goalie in the league Halak is ranked somewhere between 30-50.

At least I now can bug Goffie about some players now :P

I agree, if this deal had Price instead of Halak then it would have been closer.

Damn you goffie..... I will likely sneak into #8 in the conference and have to play you first round again.

As for the deal it is not a huge overpayment for guy he really wanted. Ovechkin is a guy that can always garner a good return, and he could always move him later if things do not work out.

Not 100% sure but did the Leafs not finish 1st or 2nd in the league last year? I don't think its a terrible deal but it could be a long season without a #1 goalie in net.
