Default Thermal Imaging - exterme hot/cold rooms

Does anyone know anything about this? I am either looking at renting a thermal imaging camera (if possbile) or hiring someone to do it for me.

My kids bedrooms are really cold in the winter and very hot in the summer, and I am worried that I either need new windows, it is poorly insulated or other problems. I am hoping that the camera would help me better understand what I need to do.

Thanks for the hlp

I would think you could have an expert check that out rather than trying to get a camera for a one off, but i'm not sure.

If you have sliders that are over 10 years old, that's probably the case. I would recommend casement (crank out) windows next time if you can afford them. They are much better insulators.

Also- are the kid's rooms above a garage by any chance? If so, the heat may be escaping through a poorly insulated barrier between the garage and house.

No garage below both rooms are above either the living room or the office. They both have 2 outside walls and two windows each.

I actually found a company that will come and do the imaging on the entire house for $0.10 /sqft (which includes exterior and ceilings) and will create a report with any of the problem areas along with images and recomendations.

Buy an infrared thermometer instead. That should help you find hot/cold spots. No need for an expensive camera.

Something like this.

They work really well. I have no idea the cost.

You will see that most inefficiencies will be through the windows like you say, or around your rim-joist/foundation connection, and at the top of exterior walls where the truss heels sit. It can be difficult to get adequate insulation in these places.....

If you really want a thermal imaging camera, just go to a Chinese airport. I'm sure they have lots left over from the SARS outbreak.

I'm in discussions to invest in a renovation company that has this and is looking to expand on its use. It is also awesome for detecting water leaks behind walls.

If you wait a few months I'll see if I can talk them into doing a Calgary "blitz" and will most definately let CP know if we do.

Try leaving your furnace fan on 24/7, this will help with both your summer over heating and winter underheating problems.
