Default Thrashers/Stars make 2 deals

Deal 1:

To Dallas:
W Jay Pandolfo(73 ov) - 1 year remaining at 4 M

To Atlanta:
2009 3rd (Calgary) - 1st pick of round 3 = 65th overall

We made this deal because we couldn't afford to play Pandolfo on the bottom 2 lines with his 4 M salary. I'm sure he'll play well with the Stars in a checking role. Thanks to Matt for the talks.

Deal 2:

To Dallas:
98 overall in the draft

To Atlanta:
102 and 125 overall in the draft

Updated to include the 2nd deal which was a swap of draft picks.

So two 4ths to move up 4 spots in the 4th round?

Weird deal. Aren't you better served to have more 4ths and hope you find a gem - what's the point of moving up 4 spots that late?

Neil's got his silver tongue going of late.

The 15 player ECHL roster limit is playing into it for me. Right now I have 13 guys. 4 or 5 of them could be released without much thought. Then 7 draft picks will hit the ECHL when we're done drafting.

Yeah, when the same GM keeps coming to trade with you, you're probably getting raped. I guess Neil is to the Stars what Schumm is to me Larf!

An early 3rd for Pandolfo? I don't get what's going on for UFA's recently...Smyth gets dealt for nothing, then other UFA's get moved for this, weird.

Last year I had 25 players on my ECHL squad after the draft - you have all off-season to trade them. If you hit on good players you can swap them for future higher picks.

I hit on a couple of guys in the 4th round last year that went in the NHL's 2nd - I swapped them for 2009 2nds.

Plenty of time -don't give away your picks for nothing.

Pandolfo is actually a signed player so I can sorta understand that one.

How is that rape?

A 3rd for a good checker in Pandolfo who is one of the best pk'ers in the CPHL? I only moved him for cap space issues. Dallas has the room so a 3rd is hardly rape.

Dallas should have insisted cap be thrown his way. Sort of like what Anaheim got out of the Ethan Moreua deal. They gave up a bit better asset, but they also got 2.5 million back for a guy in Moreau who should be rated similar to what Pandolfo is.

It's not a franchise ruining deal....but I think Atlanta got pretty good deals here for what they were looking to do. Dallas...he could be a bit more stubborn on assets like this for what he got back.

This year I felt I should aim for the best picks possible. It is a little ironic that I'm aiming for quality this year, when last year I was one of the guys massing the late round picks.

I did surrender #52 and #65 to get the checkers Pahlsson and Pandolfo. I needed defensive forwards no matter what sim we were going to use. I'm optimistic role players and checkers will have more of an impact in the new sim.

What Grant is saying is definitely valid. In my position with the ECHL players I figured why not try to move the 4ths and 5ths in an upward direction for a shot at a 'better' draftee. There is a point in the draft where you shouldn't do these type of move ups, probably once you start talking 3rd rounders. I'm not going to do this with the 5 best picks that I have. They're staying with me.

Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to prospects and drafting. I have no access to Canadian major junior but plenty to the NCAA. I have season tickets at Colgate University, the NHL network televises a game every Friday, the Fox Sports networks broadcast WCHA games. That's why I go after college guys so much.

P.S. Was the Stars bid for Corban Knight successful? Felt I should try and pounce on him. He'll make up for trading some of these picks away. Ranked 64th North American skater by Central Scouting. His mother delivered him at the right time, so he was a free agent by the CPHL league rules.
