Looking to buy a new (used) SUV

So my wife's explorer has had it. It needs about $4000 worth of work and it not worth $2000. So we're in the market for an SUV. I hate buying automobiles, it makes me sick. I feel like I'm gonna get swindled. Here's my question:

I'm looking on the auto trader web site and I see these trucks and suvs for dirt cheap. like $8000 for a BMW X5. Is that right? Is it something to do with a lease? We only want to spend between $10000-$15000 but closer to $10000.

any advice?
