Who SHOULD have my SIN?
So when I got home yesterday, I recieved a letter from the bank that previously held my mortgage. I left them last September for a mortgage with a new bank. The letter stated that a laptop had been stolen from their bank that contained my name, address and account number. They went on to say that THEY had contacted the credit bureaus to add a note to my file that this has happened. They (my previous bank) stated that they had added a note to their own files as well should anything come up. They also told me that if I paid my mortgage with them through another institution I should contact them as well wich got me wondering if the account number they were reffering to was the one I had with the bank in question or MY bank that I paid the mortgage through.
I tried to contact equifax to make sure that they had a note on file regarding this and as I pawed my way through the automatic menu, they asked for my SIN. That got me to thinking, who rightfully can have access to my SIN? How would they have gotten it, should they even have it?
As far as I knew, the only people that should have your SIN is your employer and banks for purposes of taxes and such. Any time someone else asks me for it like a cell phone provider, I tell them to pound sand.
So in short, who rightfully can have access to my SIN?
