2009/2010 School Year to begin for students on August 27, 2009
The first day of school for students on the traditional school calender will be on Thursday August 27, 2009. I think this is the first time in history I will have to teach children in the month of August in Calgary. The early start is a result of the WorldSkills Competition staring in Calgary on September 1, 2009.
When I was a kid we always started the day after labor day. Always. (this is in the US mind you)

it always seemed to get a lil earlier every year here in the states... I went from one school district that started after labor day to one that started mid august and it was only 5 mins away lol ...... i did like the august start cause we got let out mid may !!

We always got out the week before Memorial Day too...so something has changed. Summer vacation now is about 3-4 weeks less than it was when I was a kid (which I imagine is several years longer ago for me than you).

We go back three days earlier for what truly is a once-in-a-lifetime type experience for students aged 14-up, and we get three other days off during the year in lieu that we wouldn't normally get. I'm fine with this, nothing wrong with allowing students to broaden their horizons.
