Is anyone using VOIP for their telephone line?

I'm thinking of switching my TELUS phone over to voip. I think I can save over $20.00 plus dollars per month with the switch.

I will still maintain my telus high speed internet, if they don't penalize me for dropping my home phone service.

Any one have any experience with Voip?

I'm looking at vonage for my provider.

Thanks in advance

When I looked into this some months back, Telus didn't have a plan that allows you to have Internet service without basic phone service. You will pay for it even if you never use it.

I also don't think you can get Shaw high speed without the basic cable package.

A guy I work with has VoIP and loves it.

He had to switch from Telus DSL though (when he cancelled his phone line).

He uses Shaw now, with no cable TV package.

I think his service is Primus, but I'm not sure.

I use VOIP through vonage in the US. We've been pretty happy with it so far. You get the odd breakup, maybe once every few days, and lose the odd call, but 99% of the time, you forget it's not a regular phone line. Saved a lot of money too. $27/month, which includes local phone service, voice mail, caller id/call waiting, and free long distance to Canada and the US.

As has been mentioned already, Telus will definitely not let you cancel your land line and also keep their DSL service.

You sure can (use Shaw high speed without basic cable). I do. TV ain't worth anything nowadays. Can watch my sports at a bar or a friends house (more fun with others anyway) and get my news from papers and internet.

I use VOIP in Japan - it saves me a bundle what with phone calls home and what-not. I recommend it for folks who make lots of long distance calls. If you call a customer of the same VOIP service in Japan, no matter where it is, the call (long distance included) is actually free.
