Default Man shot and killed in NE, Calgary's 7th homicide of the year

http://www.canada.com/globaltv/calga...d2de72&k=91300

Still trying to determine if it was a random act or not. Noone in custody as of yet.

I remember a time when we'd have 7 murders a year....

Still not as bad as here. It's getting depressing.

after watching The Wire and seeing the ultra realistic depiction of Baltimore, it's made me appreciate Calgary in a whole new light. 7 murders is still 7 too many, but virtually any US city would trade murder rates with Calgary in a heartbeat

Hmmm... I drove home from hockey tonight, and the cops were pulling virtually everycar over on memoriial dr. ne. There were probably 20 cop cars with people pulled over between the east city limits and deerfoot. I guess it makes a lot more sense now.

On another note, does anyone else feel like the difference between most of those north east communities and living in a sw community like say, Canyon Meadows or Lake Bonivista is like being in two entirely different cities?

Seems every city I've seen, the West is safer than the East. Are there cities that you all know of that is different?

I work and live in the NE. If you're planning to move here make sure you're on the west side of Deerfoot.

I live off Edmonton Trail but work in Marlborough. It's night and day difference.

Well maybe I see what you are getting at, but I grew up in the neighborhood where this incident occurred, I can tell you with all honesty that it wasn't a situation where one would feel as though they could be murdered at any time. Marlborough Park was a great neighborhood to live in.

Anyway, aren't those neighborhoods in the SE?

Ive lived in the NE my whole life and still do and theres nothing wrong with it. People always say its the bad part of town like nothing has ever happened in the south end of the city. And last time I was down south in canyon meadows (last week) I sure didnt notice anything special about that area, no different then where I live.

I believe the printed Herald I read this morning mentioned the guy was hit with 5 shots. That is not random.

Is NE Calgary becoming the new Compton?

HAWC was out over our place for a few hours last night shining its spotlight in nearby alleys. CPS officers on the street corners signaling each other with flashlights. CPS cars driving around with a purpose shining their spotlights. Even a K9 handler with her dog sniffing around by our neighbour's house.

I have no idea if it's related but the timing is too much of a coincidence.

I have lived in the NE all my life and it isn't all that bad. Only parts people may be weary of is forest lawn.

I go to the NW frequently by my bro house and don't see much of a difference.

Holy exaggeration, Calgary NE is still not even that bad compare to cities as wholes with crime, nevermind US cites. It's a problem sure, but all cities have them. The more people you get, the more crime your likely to get.

Technically forest Lawn, dover etc. are all S.E. I too am a life long N.E. resident and can confirm it is no worse than any part of the city, random gang acts can happen anywhere.

I used to know a few people who wouldn't venture into any neighbourhood North of Peigan Trail and East of Barlow Trail when it's dark out. The would refer to it as a "toilet" or "enemy territory" or "drive-by central". Plus some other racist/stereotypes remarks.

When race is involved is where I draw the line. In fact, these people I no longer associate with.

I can't say that I have had any issues up the NE. I lived in castleridge for 4 years back in the day... I figure all cities have "rougher" parts, just be smart and know what's going on around all the time.

Unfortunately I think a lot of the stereotype of the N.E. is race related. Which is too bad.
