Default Rare uncontacted Amazon tribe photographed from air.

It facinates me that in 2008, there are still stoneage people living in remote areas with no idea about the modern world. I have heard of this, but it still blows my mind.

Quote:
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Amazon Indians from one of the world's last uncontacted tribes have been photographed from the air, with striking images released on Thursday showing them painted bright red and brandishing bows and arrows.

The photographs of the tribe near the border between Brazil and Peru are rare evidence that such groups exist. A Brazilian official involved in the expedition said many of them are in increasing danger from illegal logging.
"What is happening in this region is a monumental crime against the natural world, the tribes, the fauna and is further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the 'civilized' ones, treat the world," Jose Carlos Meirelles was quoted as saying in a statement by the Survival International group.

One of the pictures, which can be seen on Survival International's Web site (http://www.survival-international.org), shows two Indian men covered in bright red pigment poised to fire arrows at the aircraft while another Indian looks on.

That is awesome on so many levels. It is sad to think that they likely will not remain 'uncontacted' very much longer.

Wicked stuff.

Love the photo of pissed tribesmen with primitive projectile weapons pointed at the aircraft. Which undoubtedly scared the hell out of them.

I wonder what the hell is going through their minds. This should be cross posted in the captions forum.

I don't know about you guys, but if I were one of these people, and at some point I discovered that I could've lived my life with air conditioning and electricity but didn't because some activists thought my uncontactedness should be preserved, I'd be quite upset at said activists.

Problem with that is you don't just bring ancient tribes into a suburb of Chicago, but DAMN would that be good TV.

If you look at Africa as an example, its not like IF they knew about technology its not like they'd jump into some nice lifestyle. I think these guys are happier just living their own little happy lives.

Well yeah, ignorance is bliss... but does that make it better? And even if we never contact them, it's probable that they will eventually discover us.

And yes, I do realize that the language barrier presents one of many problems with my scenario. But if we keep a close enough eye on them to learn their language without them discovering us...

Yeah, maybe.

It's interesting because back in the 80s, an uncontacted Mayan tribe in the Yucatan was dicovered while they were developing the area around Tulum. They were never forced to leave their village, but most young people have and now work in the hotel/tourist industry.

I wonder what the government in Brazil does to protect them from contact. You would think that by now, some logger or natural resource tycoon would have gone there and swindled the land away from them. If you went there in a helicoptor armed with a few modern deviced, you would probably be a god to them.

Lets hope the photographer learned from this movie and didn't toss a coke bottle out the window of the aircraft.

Oops, you're completely right. My excuse is that it took me a surprisingly long time to find a youtube clip of it in english.

Interesting tidbit from down under: in 1984 the last uncontacted tribe in Australia was found in the Gibson Desert of Western Australia and promptly brought in to 'civilisation'. Now they wear jeans and sell paintings.

There are people in the world, and some of them probably live in Canada, who feel they (or at least their ancestors) were better off before they witnessed the miracles of electricity and air conditioning.

I wouldn't be willing to trade my way of life, culture and home for some technology that makes my already satisfying life a little easier.

Seems to me it'd be like giving everything I know up for flying cars and better internet access.

With many of these tribes, they kill any intruders. And don't think for a moment that the guns you bring along would protect you.
