Default Gardening help

I tried this in the power ring with no luck so I thought I would give it one last try here.

I bought a house in July and it came with flowers and stuff??? I have no clue what to do with them. I am looking for someone that will come and do some spring cleanup and teach me what I need to do to maintain everything throughout the summer. I would probably hire them again in the fall to do cut down the ones that need to be cut and leave the ones that don't???

If anyone does this for a living or has someone that does this for them please let me know.

Well, first I think you need to identify what kind of "flowers and stuff" you have. Some perennial flowers require very minimal care, by that I mean, you can almost just let them flower and do their own thing, maybe remove old foliage once a year, maybe do a bit of dead heading and that is it.

But many perennial flowers require more than spring and fall care. And they require dividing on a regular basis, fertilizing and the like. So I think you have to find out what you actually have growing. Once you know that, you will be able to determine what care they require, and at that point you will know if you have the ability and time to commit to that care. If you dont' have that amount of time to spare or don't have the green gardening thumb , then this spring is the time to put in different plants, shrubs etc that would be low maintenance but still eye appealing. And before you do that, you will need suggestions as to what plants require what type of sunlight conditions, moisture conditions and the like. You can't just pick out any plant or shrub that looks nice in a gardening center and plant it anywhere on your lot. Some require full sun and dry conditions, some require lots of shade and moisture, etc And you might have to prepare the soil beds they are growing in as well. If the soil is old and the plants are mature, they might have to be dug up and some new top soil and compost added.

Why don't you start out by asking Sunnyside Nurseries, Golden Acre or GreenGate if they could suggest anyone to come and give you some ideas and suggestions?

The City of Calgary has its own horticulturalists, I don't think they do private work, but perhaps they could suggest one. Barry Erskine is also a horticulturalist.

Check out your neighbours ... if one of them has a lot of flower gardens on the go, make friends with them and ask them to come and take a look at what you have. Chances are they'll be able to tell you what 90 per cent of the stuff is once it starts coming up, and how to look after it.

Thanks for your info Red. I am pretty clueless with this stuff. It was all here when I moved in so I'm not really sure what they planted (perennials, etc). I will try to figure out what it all is. Maybe they left little name tags beside everything for me.
