Default Canon camera troubles

So i own a canon IXU 50 (the exact same as a canon SD400) but am having problems with the lens opening.

When I turn it on to take a picture it just goes beep beep beep and then nothing. I can still scroll through pictures and connect to my computer but it just seems like something is stopping the lens from opening.

Any know anyway to fix it, or where I can get it repaired in Calgary?

I'm of absolutely no help, and certainly hope someone responds to help you guys out, but search online forums dedicated to Canon cameras. I'm sure you'll come up with something. By the looks of it though, it's probably not a doyourselfer type job. If Calgary has a Henry's, I'd bring it to them to check it out.

On the other hand, I have a Canon SD600 and man, the flash stinks in most Canon cameras - daytime flash - white people = lightbulbs; nightime flash - everypeople = brown people (certainly works for me as I'm brown naturally), but man does the colour stink compared to Sony cameras.

Going OT, but on the other hand, the auto exposures work a heck of the lot better on Canons. 1/40th of a second is too slow for any non-tripod mode, Sony!

Canon is located in town, over by the Calgary Sun building (2828 16 Street NE). If it is no longer under warranty, I suggest Alta Camera Service.

Iggypop - it sounds like you have lens error. Unfortunately, that's something you'll have to get repaired. Does it say anything on the screen when you power up? (eg. E error?)

Camera repair costs are through the roof. It's generally not the parts, but the labour. Most bills come out to around $100. With cameras dropping in price, it's not worth repairing. You can take that $100 and invest it into something new that has the latest technology. Some of Canon's new line has been announced. For something similar to yours, I'd look at the SD1100 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...non_sd1100.asp). They should be available in Canada shortly. In addition, it runs on a NB4L battery; if I'm not mistaken, your camera runs on that batter.

Claeren - I remember that a lot of the S1 cameras were prone to that problem back in the day. I believe it was circut issue. Have you tried using the viewfinder to take any photos? Turn the screen off and try just using the viewfinder.

I'm not sure about your particular model, but a lot of camera have an option to increase or reduce/increase the intensity of the flash. Try decreasing the intesity of the flash in the day and increasing it in the night. Just take a few random shots of a white wall. When it actually looks white in the picture, you should be good to go.
