ORLANDO, Fla. -- PGA Tour golfer Tripp Isenhour was charged with killing a hawk on purpose with a golf shot because it was making noise as he videotaped a TV show.
According to court documents, Isenhour got upset when a red-shouldered hawk began making noise, forcing another take. He began hitting balls at the bird, then 300 yards away, but gave up.
Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.
Isenhour allegedly said "I'll get him now," and aimed for the hawk
I can't even hit the guy on the tractor at the range.
This actually sounds a lot like the Dave Winfield/seagull incident at the old Exhibition stadium.

What next? If I throw a rock to scatter seagulls is that considered attempted murder?
If seagulls were endangered it might.
At first glance I thought, what a ridiculous thing. After reading the story, he deserves everything he gets. You take 10 shots at the thing and then claim "I didn't think I'd actually hit it" after you do?
Moron.

Oh come on. I know the PGA had their "These guys are good" commercials but do you really think he expected to hit a hawk from 75 yards out? Further to that, did he really expect the hawk not to fly away at the slightest movement like every other bird does. Unless this guy has some sort of history where it is proven that he does consistent harm to birds of prey, I'm going to give him a pass.
That's harsh... Reminds me of a little story from the high school days. Me and a buddy were cutting across an open field one fine day. The place was littered with gophers and gopher holes. So kinda as a joke, my buddy grabs a rock and throws it at a gopher that poked his head up from his hole.
No joke, the thing was at least 40 feet away and he hit him right in the head. The poor thing was KO'd (dead).

No, I don't think he expected to, but he was trying.
Why?
The charges fit.
If a hunter sees a protected grizzly bear 1500 yards away and starts taking pot shots at it and accidentally kills it is he given a pass? No difference IMO.

I'm mustering my righteous indignation.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
He went out of his way to target the Hawk . . . . . so, even though it was a magnificent stroke of luck, even for a PGA guy, he should still be punished as per the norms established by society.

this is no different than that female PGA player who hit at that guy snoozing in the stands during a practice round and bonked him.
A PGA player should be able to land inside a 5 foot circle 9 times out of 10 from 75 yards out. If he couldn't he wouldn't be on the PGA tour. To me it isn't that far off from asking a guy to hit a target in the net from the top of the faceoff circle. Not as easy as it is from in front of the net, but still an NHLer should be able to do it within 10 shots.
The guy has some serious problems on his hands.
Good
