Default Macleod - Heritage Accident

Anyone know what happened at Macleod and Heritage this morning?? What a gong show. The intersection was completely closed down, a cop car was smashed up and two other cars looked like they were in a head on collision.

Had to detour up/down Heritage to get around.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
-----------------------------------------------------------------

At about 10:00 am on Sunday the 24 February 2008 police, fire
and EMS responded to a collision at the intersection of
Macleod Tr and Heritage Dr. SW involving a marked police unit
and several other vehicles.

Initial investigations indicate that that two marked police
vehicles, the first a Crown Victoria and the second a full
sized Ford van were west bound on Heritage Dr SW. The
operator of the Crown Victoria was stopped at the red light
at Macleod Tr, activated the vehicles emergency equipment and
entered the intersection followed by the Ford van which also
had its emergency equipment activated. The Crown Victoria
was struck in the passenger side door by a light brown 2007
Toyota Corolla which was being driven south bound on Macleod
Tr in the extreme west lane. As a result of the collision
the marked police unit was forced into the eastbound lanes of
Heritage Dr. where it struck two other vehicles waiting at
the light.

The two elderly women, occupants of the Toyota, were both
treated and transported by EMS to hospital, one in life
threatening condition and the other in serious but stable
condition. The officer, and sole occupant, driving the Crown
Victoria was also taken to hospital, treated and released.
No other individuals were injured.

The police units where responding to a domestic call
involving a weapon in the Haysboro area at the time of the
collision

The intersection at Macleod Tr. and Heritage Dr. SW will be
shut down for several more hours while the investigation is
completed.

The Traffic Section is conducting the investigation.

Man, this was a huge pain in the arse, I was on my way to the bar and almost missed the puck drop!

Seriously though, this seems like bad luck all around, the cops were stopped at the light, get the call flick on the cherries and bang.

Hopefully nobody was hurt too badly.

Everything was cleared up on my way home though...

Anyone know what happened on Macleod Friday before the game? I waited for 8 lights without moving between 9th and 10th ave, under the train tracks. I finally had to go around my lane of traffic that refused to turn left onto 10th so that I could.

They had 9th Ave. completely shut down between 3rd and 4th Streets for some type of construction. This may have caused a spillover effect. It was brutal. If I had known, I would have taken another route...

The Toyota's passenger, a 92-year-old woman, was taken to Foothills Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She died Sunday afternoon. Her name will not be released until the Medical Examiner has done an investigation and her next of kin have been notified.

The 70-year-old female driver of the Toyota sustained serious injuries, while the officer was taken to hospital, then treated and released.

Duty inspector Keith Pollock said there is no indication the Toyota was speeding but also no signs it tried to stop before the collision.

How very sad.

Queue the calls for mandatory driver's testing. I know there are some days my mother in law shouldn't be driving, its downright scary...

No kidding. My grandpa rants about how teenagers shouldnt be allowed to drive, yet he's the scariest driver I know. He doesn't even look when he backs out of the driveway.

Terrible to hear. That's just off of where I lived in Calgary a couple years ago.
