So what happens in Canada when US TV goes all digital next year?
With so many stations offered by Canadian cable companies coming in from the States, what happens to their analog signal up here? The switch date is Feb. 17, 2009.

Nothing.
Unless you are using rabbit ears or antenna to get the signal you won't be affected.

Exactly.
The switch is for broadcast television, not cable. As long as Shaw is still providing analog cable, most of it's customers will remain unaffected.

Unless Shaw want to be jerks and try to force people to digital cable under the pretense of this change (which is BS - they already get many signals in digital and convert to analogue)

For a couple more years but if you're using an antenna, you'll need an ATSC tuner. Most new digital TVs have them or you can buy a separate tuner or even get one to connect to your computer. Such as this.

that would be illegal, the CRTC mandates that Shaw and every other cable providor must have so many stations broadcast in analog. which is stupid, because since analog uses up so much bandwidth that limits the amount of digital signals that Shaw can put out (i.e. more HD content)
and really, Shaw now has the small DCT700 digital boxes that sell for $55. your cable bill is likely more than that per month

I'm just saying that bout Shaw because they are local. I should have put <insert local cable provider here>
But as a story on the news last night mentioned, some TV retailers are using the switch in the US to mislead customers and sell TVs (by telling them they need a new TV instead of a STB).
I have no little doubt that this will be used as a marketing tool to get more people to switch to digital cable. (and for the record, I receive Star Choice, so it's no skin off my nose)

Is there a mandated switchover date in Canada?
Wouldn't it make some sense to coincide our switch date with the US?

Shaw wants to get rid of Analog, but the CRTC won't let them do it right now. In the not to distant future they will though, and IMHO it is in the best interest of the majority of consumers.

I heard recently that the US government will sell of the broadcast bands currently occupied by TV and that Cell companies are lining up to buy that. Apparently with such a huge increase in use because there are so many cell phones it will affect signals of HD meaning the whole thing is a bit redundant. Think I heard this on Real Time or the Colbert Report so I'm sure it isn't that technically accurate.
Anyone else heard anything about this?

The FCC and potential buyers of the spectrum have been arguing about the rules for the auction for months. Specifically, the FCC has mandated rules about leaving "gaps" for emergency services, coverage requirements, rules about reselling bandwidth, etc.
There have been lots of rumours about who will be the buyers of the spectrum, from major telcos to Google.

Haven't found anything official but the Canadian switch date to digital appears to be August 31, 2011.
I don't think local stations want the expense of switching over and won't do it until they are forced to, so judging by the CRTCs backbone, I'm not holding my breath.
I'll add to this that Global will be activating their HD OTA stations in Hamilton and Vancouver by the end of April and Calgary and Edmonton will supposedly be next. Vancouver already has CBC and CTV OTA HD.

As more and more people switch over to HD the Canadian stations won't be able to simsub the American shows unless they have an OTA HD station themselves. They'll lose local advertising.

Some have even said something about internet being broadcasted on the analog spectrum.
