Default external hard drive

I recently installed leopard on my mac, and am looking to take advantage of time machine. I want to get an external hard drive that's 500 GB. Anyone have any suggestions? Either pre boxed, or an enclosure and case. Oh, and if you know of any good firewire enclosures, that'd be even better than USB. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest Western Digital. I have never had any problems with any of their hard drives. They work.
Here is a link to their external products page:

I have a LaCie that I really like. It doesn't make a sound, which is what I like about it the most.

I would buy an enclosure then put your own drive into it. Check out memoryexpress.com for some ideas and what prices you would be looking at.

do enclosures get hot, or do they have built-in fans? Can you hook up any IDE harddrive? Thanks. Didn't even know these things existed before this thread

I'd recommend the WD Mybook. Only $169 at costco for the 500 gig and it's smart enough to turn itself off when you turn off your comp. Some of the external harddrives just stay turned on.

1.5 Terrabyte WD MyBook

160MB Lacie Rugged for the laptop

Both Firewire.

Good experiences with both.

It was there. It was on the store shelf. It was the one that was Mac-formated. Go big or go home.

Always buy more storage than you think you'll need.

The Lacie Rugged in a fine portable device. You don't need a power source. Comes with a thick rubber protective sleeve for those a little paranoid about dropping stuff. Apple used to sell 'em on their site (where I got mine), but you can find 'em around town or on eBay.

I actually prefered it to the Lacie Porshe.

be wary of LaCie drives guys. LaCie just makes the enclosures and a lot of time to cut costs they use some crappy drives in them.

Really? I've never encountered a problem and that's going back a fair number of years.

My brother has had two crap out on him in the last couple years. It's probably just hit or miss. If anything just stay away from the really really cheap ones.
