Default Anybody know anything about Boston?

My wife and I are relocating (again) next summer, this time to Boston, where she'll be working at Tufts University. Which means I need to find some work and a place to live over the next 9 or 10 months--and probably make a few trips up there to scout around.

What I'm wondering is--has anyone around here either lived there or visited for a long enough time to get a sense of the lay of the land? What are the good and bad places to live? What's a good place to find a recreational hockey league? To watch hockey and have a beer? etc. etc.

Even general impressions of the city would be nice--I've never been there. (hey, it can't be worse than Philly, right? )

i know a bunch of people from there. what kind of work do you do or are you looking for? you have my email address. shoot me a list of things you want to find out.

also -- you will have an over abundance of unused "R's" now. it is customary to add them in places not meant for them. for example...wash will how be warsh. if something end with a vowel, you will also need to add an "R" to the end, sometimes it is necessary to add "ER" to flow better. the name victoria now becomes victoria-er.

I'm a college instructor, I guess--though I am interested in breaking out of the ivory tower in the long term. I've done freelance writing for years, and edit an online journal, among other things, so I'm hoping I can find work in a communications/writing capacity someday--that's my dream.

In the meantime, I teach at Drexel University and Philadelphia University right now. My wife's boss is going to try to get me an adjunct position at Tufts, but I would see that as a temporary solution, for the reasons listed above.

If you can, get a place around Harvard Square - apparently a very good district to live, as well it is close to all the great areas in Boston; most are a train ride away.

My friend is leaving Boston in the next month or so, if you're moving soon and looking to buy, he and his wife own a place a block away from Harvard Square I can see if I can hook you up.

Lucky man, I love Boston - one of the places in the US I would have no problem moving to.

Thanks, but we're not moving until next summer. I'm not sure if we'll buy or not. In Philly, we found that the property taxes were a bit prohibitive--not sure how that looks in Boston. We'll likely only be there a few years.

i'm not sure it would lead to anything, but a guy i've known for a number of years is an editor of some sort for the boston globe. i can shoot him an email if that would be of help?

Don't have any expectation that Cheers on Beacon is anything like the TV show.

I was only there for a few weeks, and stayed in Beacon Hill. Nice area but big bucks, good access to the trains and almost everything downtown is in walking distance.

Can't hurt! Though if I were him, I'd be rightly skeptical about hiring some guy from the internet to do any sort of writing! But I'll take whatever contacts I can get!

Yeah--I wonder if he ever comes around here anymore.

I understand why we traded him, but I sure wish he was still a Flame.
