Depends what you're into.

If you're into:
  • Clubbin' and hitting on young chicks, go to The Roadhouse or The Whiskey
  • Clubbin' and hitting on old chicks, go to Tantra, Metropolitan Grill, or The Mercury
  • Drinking with phat beats and DJ's, go to the Hi-Fi Club
  • Drinking and clubbin' at a chillin' kinda club, go to The Amsterdam Rhino
  • Drinking lots of different kinds of beers, go to Bottlescrew Bills
  • Hitting on drug addicts, go to The Cecil

You want to go to the eternal meat market that is known as The Back Alley, or sometimes the Crack Alley, or any other variation of ...ack Alley. I know the place is a dive but it's fun and there's lots of girls there. The Ship & Anchor is always fun and same goes for almost everywhere on 17th.

I could tell lots of tales of the Cecil - our starting place of choice in the 1980s for cheap beer before going to Electric Avenue:

- we witnessed a wedding reception there - the happy couple actually met at the Cecil, and thought it would be romantic to return there - the families were clearly mortified

- a native canadian male asked my buddy to dance, not because he was gay, but because he was too drunk to differentiate between men and women (yes, there is a dance floor at the Cecil)

- one woman was passed out on the dance floor, while people continued to dance around her - later she got back on her feet and resumed dancing (we called it the TSN Turning Point)

- there was the classy lady that followed me into the washroom to watch me pee

- and another lovely lady spit in my face when I declined her generous offer to dance

What kind of music does your friend like? Are you looking for a true club atmosphere or lounges/pubs? That makes a difference on where to go in Calgary. Also what factors in is where he/she is from. He/she is going to be very dissapointed in Calgary as this city is not known for a great club/nightlife city. So no matter where you take em, its not going to be overly exciting.

Calgary really is a boring place when it comes to nightlife. We have no club district like other cities, 17th is marginal at best, but in reality a place where restaurants and lounges reside.

If it is a dude, he will almost certainly see less women out ratio wise then most other cities. If your friend is a gal, she will like it a little more as when one goes out in this city, there are always way more guys out than women. Not to say there are no hot women out(every city has hot women), its just you will always find a higher number of men out than woman wherever you go.

I can help ya out with places you may want to visit as I a familiar with the scene in Calgary and its nightlife, so would gladly give ya insight on where to go.

To all who replied:THANK YOU.

He's coming from Weyburn Saskatchewan, so anywhere should be an improvement from what he's used too. Except the Cece, then it might be a tie. Does the Cecil have carpet in it? I had a beer there once with a coworker, and as I went to exit the parking lot, a disheveled(to put it nicely) 'lady' jumped in the front seat with me. I had to stop my truck, get out, walk around and 'encourage' her to gits out. Twilight Zone-y.

Since we're trainin' it down, I think we might try the Amsterdam & HiFi, then head for 17th, if needed. Do Cougs still hunt at the Met?

Thanks Again, CP.

Haha I cant believe you actually went there. Thats where Id go if I wanted to commit suicide but didnt want to go by my own hand.

On a side note, I cant believe how much Calgary changes. I moved away three years ago, and already on that list I dont recognize half those places

I sincerely doubt thats the place you went. Its a run-down old hotel that looks like its been around since the 40's, with a slimy bar in front. And all around it(and inside) are crackheads hanging out. Its Calgary's East Hastings, if East Hastings were limited to one building.
