so says he, maybe he did maybe he didn't but i don't think theres near enough proof for him to be claiming he invented it.

^^ I think Dan might be right. I seem to recall hearing about the ASCII Smilie being used as early as the late 60's or early 70's- it was mentioned when they were talking about the birth of the Internet.

I did find a mention of non-ASCII smilies being used in the early 70's. The type of text being used could be typed on top of each other- creating a smiling face.
