Default Good golf deals in Alberta

Lets have a thread where we share some ideas about some good courses to play and what days these places offer up good deals for people.

We all know Kananaskis is fantasitc for resident Albertans....but I think it's all but impossible to get on unless you book a tee time 6 monts in advance. But I suspect you can be on a waiting list for cancellations? I played Mount Kitt once because someone I knew was able to come accross a tee time, and we had to bring someone a Saskatoon pie.

I played Mens Night at Wolf Creek last Monday. Wolf Creek is about 45km North of Red Deer just off Hiway 2. For $50 you got 18 holes of golf a shared power cart and your choice of the buffet dinner or a burger off their menu and a beer in the restaurant afterwards. I play about an 18 handicap and it was my first round of the year but I found the Wolf to be pretty challengin. Undulated greens, and you have to hit good approach shots to keep your ball on the green. A few tee shots are pretty narrow and you have to make a good shot to carry some obstacles. IMO a beginner golfer is over his head there in my opinion. I've talked to a lot of golfers who have said they didn't like the course because it's too tough. I don't think it's too tough, but you have to play a good game to score well there as it doesn't really give you many oppurtunities to recover from a bad shot.

I'm heading to a course called Black Bull tommorrow for their Wednesday 2 for 1 special Apparently for $69 you get your golf as well as a powercart. Although in reading their site it also said $29 twilight rate after 4:00. First I'll see if the deal is legit...and than I'll post my course review.

Anyone else have some info on other courses?

Beaver Dam in Madden - about 30 minutes north of the city on Simon's Valley Road. Around $45 for green fees & half cart. Easy to get on to, and pretty challenging. From the beginning, it looks like it's just a course on old farmland, but as you get going, it's cut into a valley, and is pretty challenging, with some really nice holes. I usually shoot 100-105 on normal courses, and this one adds another 6-7 strokes on top of that.

Nanton is one of the cheapest golf courses in Alberta. And it's also one of the nicest to play on. From Monday to Thursday green fees are only $32 and $45 on Friday to Sunday. Staff is super friendly (maybe it's because i'm on a first name basis with most of the ladies )

Getting a tee time is never a problem. Most times I show up as a single and get on quite quickly.

Avoid the Highwood golf club in High River. It's a few blocks from my place and I found the club to have a snobish attitude. A lot of High River members have sold their shares and bought memberships out at Nanton.

Agreed. They keep the course in great shape too... the fairways are just like carpeting!

Agreed, a great course, scenic, and challenging if you don't hit straight because of all the forest.

Speargrass in Caresland - links style course with a great early week deal $45.00 including cart

Strathmore - less than $40 (i think) and you get a $5.00 food coupon to use afterwards.

Canals at Delacour - $45.00 on Mondays and Tuesdays

Thanks man! Been looking for new courses that aren't too expensive to play.

Can anyone give me the scoop on River's Edge?

I'm playing 18 tomorrow and know nothing about the course.

The Canal is a good course and I enjoyed it, but depending on when you are there the mosquitos are horrendous. Apparently they are not allowed to spray for them either (I assume because of the canal?). Anyway, friends tell me that they are so bad you can hardly play at times.

I'm not too sure, but when I was there they had signs up in the washrooms to explain what they were doing to combat them and IIRC it said that they were not allowed to spray. When I was there it was fine, but had just finished raining all night.

The front 9 is the original 9 with pretty narrow fairways with trees on both sides. The holes go diagonal to each other so you need to watch out for golfers slicing balls on to your fairway. Similar design to what Fox Hollow has.

The back 9 is like the links courses you see in England. Was built a few years back

Not that difficult a course.

Thanks.

I hate dodging other golfers (either because they are on my fairway or I'm on theirs). Speaking of which, a guy in my office got hit square in the back at the Canals last month. He wasn't too impressed.

The trees between the fairways tend to catch alot of the balls.

I got in the stomach on hole #4 at Nanton a few weeks ago. Dork didn't yell 'Fore'. Ended up with a nice welt.
