Default Walking to the store damages the planet more than driving

An interesting article that only adds to the confusion for me to the environmental debate.

Then playing Oblivion means I'm part of the solution not the problem.

I've played that game for half a year and I have yet to even touch the main storyline to walk into Oblivion.

Yes, but if you always drive to the shop, you will get more and more overweight. That will make the car emit more carbon since it has to haul a heavier load around.

Why not reduce the confusion and simplfy the debate by focussing on the primary cause i.e. world overpopulation. Then, everything else becomes secondary.

For my money, I prefer to get behind some of the UN objectives to stabilize population eg. promote birth control, etc. To me it doesn't make sense to focus on reducing CO2 levels, while the root cause continues to expand with very little attention.

Except people will eat the same amount either way.

In fact, most people i know who are the type of person to walk to the store are the same types that watch what they eat (ironically) and thus eat less and burn more.

The difference is in their waistline, not in their calorie intake.

Except that it is a small minority of the world population that consumes the resources and emits the vast majority of the pollution.

The top 1 Billion likely use and pollute more than then bottom 5 Billion, and i wouldn't be surprised if it was a few times over.

There are so many things in that article that are counter to common sense that it hurt reading it. The logic used in that article was just... brutal. I'm going to have to pick up Goodall's book and give it a full read, because what it says in this Times article is contradictory to Goodall's web site and the Amazon synopsis of his book. I would like to know what Mr. Goodall thinks of the article and if he actually endorses the message, or feels his words have been taken out of context.

The thing they never seem to take into account in this whole meat consumption is bad thing is that the emisssions from the cows are coming from a renewable source. Yes the cows emit greenhouse gases. Those greenhouse gases are then recouped when new wheat is grown a small portion of that wheat ends up sequestered underneath the ground. As far as I can see the only way that wheat wuold contribute more to GHGs would be if the cattle feed you were using had to be transported large distances.

Or if all the commercial pestisides and some of the fertilizers you used were petroleum based....which they are.

In a related story, everyone should just pleasure themselves instead of having sex because of the heat produced.
