How's my fantasy roster?
Been an NFL fan forever, but finally decided to get on the fantasy bandwagon, and today I participated in my first ever fantasy draft. I'm sure I made a few rookie mistakes(like not realizing until afterwards that you can start two RB's each week, now I know why lots of people go RB-RB in rounds 1 and 2), but I think I came out ok. What do you think of my roster?
QB- Drew Brees, Matt Hasselbeck, Chad Pennington
RB- Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Travis Henry
WR- Marvin Harrison, Hines Ward, Javon Walker, Laveranues Coles, Devery Henderson
TE- Antonio Gates, Chris Cooley
K- Jason Elam
DEF- Miami

Six, not the usual twelve, thats why it looks so stacked . Im really nervous about my LJ pick. I REALLY wanted Steven Jackson in the first round, but my buddy took him ONE PICK before me, and I panicked and went with Brees instead. Then by the 2nd I was desperate for an RB, so I took a shot and grabbed LJ. With his contract problems and threatening to hold out right now, Im extremely nervous. The rest of my team Im pretty happy with though, I especially love my TE's. I can't believe I snagged Gates in the 4th!!

That explains a lot. Pretty good team.
I'm in a 16 team league. The draft takes a long time and the rosters are tough to judge before the season starts.

Any team that has Tomlinsson pretty much win's their league. Maybe if Shaun Alexander is healthy he could close the gap a bit, but Tomlinsson likely gets 10 more TD's on his next closest guy.

I won my league last year with
McNabb/ Losman
Rudi J/Reggie B/Chester Taylor
L. Coles/Driver/don't remember
Gonzales
Ravens
I won the regular season lost in the playoffs in the semi's... McNabb put up crazy numbers til he got injured...

He carried me in one pool last year. Well, him and a player no one knew about, (when I drafted him late) Frank Gore.
The saving grace there is LT is usually drafted first, so that person is usually last in the second round. At least it gives everyone else a shot.

Your starting line-up looks great, your bench looks weak.
2 QBs on the bench? Are they going to share the one week you don't play Donovan?
In your shoes I'd dump Smith (I think he'll have a better year than Pennington, but on Philly's bye week (5) the 49ers are playing the Ravens and Jets are playing Giants. I'm not sure how good the Ravens D will be, but right now that is what I would do) and look for a RB on the waiver wire who has a chance for a breakthrough. I've had both Droughns and Foster on teams in the past couple years and neither has paid any dividends so I don't trust either of them (even if Droughns is on a different team this year).

What kind of leagues are you guys in? The league I host has been a points league for the last 5 years. This year I switched it to a head to head league with an 8 team playoff through weeks 13-16. (The guy who drafted LT last season ran away with it). I try to have my on-line draft as close to the start of the season as possible. It would sure suck to draft a player in July. Only to see that he will be out half the season because he got hurt in training camp or a preseason game.

Well the reason I decided to snag two QBs is because of McNabb's recent injury woes. Droughns and Foster were late round/low risk selections and they were the cream of what was left of the RB crop. I'm really hoping McMichael turns out to be a sleeper pick for me. I managed to grab Calvin Johnson in the 9th round.

I like Alex Smith. In my league I try to draft RBs the first three rounds. Start 2 and have 1 for backup and bye weeks. My stategy this year is to let the big name QB's go and draft Smith in the fourth round or later. Two years ago I got Carson Palmer in the fourth round. Paid off rather nicely. Grabbed Eli Manning last year in the same round. Didn't fair so well. I have a weakness for QB's taken 1st overall in their 3rd year.

That's not a bad strategy. I like to go with guys coming off of injuries but who had strong performances before the injuries. You can usually snag them in the later rounds and they'll often pay off. I'm hoping Kellen Winslow does that for me this year. Also hoping that McMichael and one of Smith or Pennington put up some decent numbers so that I can package them for a solid RB.

Was it a coincidence that you ended up with McNabb? I have found that picking with your heart can get you into trouble.

Somewhat. I actually wanted Brady but he was picked a few spots ahead of me, so the choice was McNabb or Brees. I figure, if Donovan can stay healthy for the whole year, he'll put up numbers equal to or better than Brees.
