Default Deerfoot Southbound Closed (May 31- PM)

http://www.am770chqr.com/news/news_l...news_local.cfm
Quote:
CALGARY/AM770CHQR - Due to a gasoline tanker truck that has major leak, southbound Deerfoot Trail is closed at 17 Ave SE and traffic will be diverted east and west at that point.
The tanker ran over a large piece of wood on Deerfoot which resulted in a puncture in the tank.
This closure will be in effect until the clean-up is complete.
It is anticipated this will be cleaned up at approximately 6pm.

I guess its too late to run down with a sponge and jerry can. Glad my wife is in Toronto today so I don't have to pick here up and have to wade through that poop.

I'm actually impressed. I took maybe 5 minutes longer to get home tonight. I took MacLeod to Glenmore then onto Deerfoot.

I had a guy with a pickup truck full of his possessions eject a mattress right in front of me.

People are idiots as far as securing thier loads.

Dump trucks rarely cover thier loads, I've got a ton of chips on my windshield from rocks hitting it.

Wow...

I actually swerved to miss that wood, and remember saying

"hmm.. thats a pretty big piece of wood just layin on the road"

Not surprised at all that someone hit it.. but punctured a gas tanker? wow.

I left work (32nd ave) at 3:00 PM and didn't get to memorial drive until 45 minutes later.

It was a gong show.

I guess that would be the reason why traffic was so bloody backed up on the way to work today.

We were late on dropping off my sisters grad stuff, she had 15 minutes to get ready that's hell if you're a girl. We left at 4 and got there at 5:30.

I heard it quite differently. From what I heard it hit a gas tank, not a gas tanker. The volume indicated (400 litres) to me would imply the fuel tank on a truck- not a tanker.

What kind of truck do you drive with a 400L tank?

(Yes I am sure you mean the gas tank of a semi....just being smart)

Yep. People just aren't smart. I had to dodge a swimming pool while driving to Edmonton last year for an exam. It was ridiculous. It flew off right in front of me. If I hadn't had my car, my other option would be my parents' old minivan, with which I wouldn't have been able to dodge that thing.

I was driving up to Edmonton a couple of weeks ago and some dick didn't tarp down his load of insulation. I didn't see the guy but there was a trail of insulation for at least 5 or 6 miles. I can see one piece flying off...but 25 pieces.....fricken moron.

I am not gonna lie... whatever accident happened on deerfoot worked in my favor. Because I knew I wouldn't get home in good time, I stayed downtown and got mighty drunk with some co-workers... wahoo. So to whoever else got delayed... hope the accident worked in your favour too. And to whoever was involved... hope you got out alright!!!!

seems every other day there is a ladder or reminents of on deerfoot. Today being no exception.

I don't know what it is about this year but stupid stuff like that is happening about 10 times as often this year then years past.

I myself have been witness to 3 accidents on deerfoot in the past month or so(one being a aforementioned stray ladder, which i barely avoided after the person infront of me was unfortunate enough to smash with their front end)

My question is, how do people not notice stuff is falling off their trucks?? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it probably cause a bit of a rackett as it fell off.

I would say its not that people don't notice. It's one of the following:

- They don't care as it is now "somebody else's problem."
- What are they going to do?

And with respect to the second one, can they really do anything? Stopping immediately could cause a serious accident. Taking the next exit and going back- do you really want to be playing "Frogger" on Deerfoot to go get your $100 ladder that may or may not already be damaged beyond use?

Of course the responsible thing would be to call somebody to remove the debris. But who? And in my mind, that is the problem. There is no signage anywhere on Deerfoot telling you where to call to report debris or other issues on the freeway.
