iPhone Likely to Stay Out of Canada (At least for 2007)
At least for 2007. Thanks to Rogers and their apparent terrible market forcasts. If I had the means to provide an entire country with this product, I'd be jumping all over it.

Haha before I read the article, I read your post and thought "your an idtiot, Im sure rogers would love to carry it, and Apple is choosing not to let them." But your right, jeez this seems like a huge mistake by rogers. Ahh and my contract is up with bell in august, this was going to be perfect to pick up the iphone!

I thought it was going to be called the "Apple Hello" because Cisco has the iPhone name and is suing them.

This is ridiculous, I have already started saving up for one. The telecom industry in Canada is just shocking.

Did you read the article? It said they don't know. It also said they may just be saying that to protect their roll out plans. It's not a "No." It's a "we don't know." Holy leap to conclusions.

No they settled. Cisco just wants a piece of Apple and participate in development. They had no grounds to sue anyway. Cisco rushed out a device and stuck the name iPhone to it in an effort to keep the copyright.
I wish one of the American cell companies would come to Canada. I am not sure why we need three crappy providers. We may as well have a crown corp rape us. I don't want porn on my phone, I want it not to cost 150 bucks a month and actually be useful.
They know whether or not they will be carrying it. If anyone at Roger's had any sense at all, they should be begging Apple to get this out ASAP after its US release. There are websites on the internet giving people tips on how to get out of their contract for the iPhone.

The country isn't large enough to support another major carrier. It's the reason both Clearnet and Fido were bought out. 1/10th the population and way more land mass make it more expensive to build and maintain the network. Fewer potential clients and as such, fewer companies to foot the bill of network maintainance will never change.

Yes, of course i did. I think a conclusion can be drawn based on the statement rogers made at the time Apple announced the iPhone, and what they're saying now. We won't see this product in Canada this year.

But that isn't what your thread title says.

No, that's an assumption, not a conclusion. But feel free to jump the gun. Personally, I don't care. Gives Telus more time to catch up. (Or gives Apple more time to develop a CDMA version, thereby allowing Telus to catch up.)

I think we'll see the iPhone in Canada, just not from a carrier. I just wonder how long it will be until they figure out how to unlock the phone.

What are the technical differences between CDMA and GSM?
Is one really "better" than the other, or do they both have different strengths?
Is it possible for a company like Telus(just to pick a name) to switch to GSM, or would that mean totally replacing their current tower system?
It just seems really annoying to require 2 different types of hardware that do essentially the same task.

From my understanding- GSM's advantage is that you have a sort of "smart card" in your phone; so you can take the card out of one phone and plunk it into the other. This is especially helpful in roaming; and there are more people on GSM worldwide because of it.
CDMA is better for data transfer; capable of higher speeds.

There's a lot of differences. I don't know that they'd have to replace their tower system but they'd have to change it completely... whether that's done by software upgrades or whatever, I don't know. However, I do know that they're trying to find a way to combine the two services. Issue is for Telus to switch to GSM, every Telus subscriber would have to change their phone. That would be a logistical nightmare, not to mention cost in the billions of dollars.

They would have to replace everything on their towers, GSM operates on different frequencies than CDMA. Or at least do a parallel install, adding GSM hardware to existing towers.
