Jurassic Park

Well I just finished watching Jurassic Park 3 on TBS.

It reminded me of the book, which I remember as probably the best book I've ever read and probably one of the first books that got me into reading.

I think I was about 10 - 12 at the time and was actually terrified reading the book. I would get to parts about the raptors and have to hide the book in my desk.. Then go back to it during the day.

To this day the music from the movie gives me the tingles and makes me remember what a great book it was.

The second movie was utter garbage, the third was kinda so so, but nothing compared to the first.

I just found that Jurassic Park 4 is planned for 2008. I'm looking forward to it.

Anyone else feel that way about Jurassic Park?

I think I'm going to re-read it and the lost world too.

I think I only ever saw the 1st one. The special effects were cool, but the acting and plot was kind of poor IMO. What I really remember from it though, is that blonde woman. They seemed to show her butt a lot. Funny thing... I can't for the life of me, remember what her face looks like, but I remember the butt. I'm sure that was the point.

I like the first one a lot. The others are pretty bad, but still, how can you go wrong with dinosaurs on screen eating people.
Kind of the same with the Jaws sequals in that respect.

Yeah, I agree the first one was good but the next two were nothing special. I bought it on VHS and soon as it was released and bought the DVD when I joined Columbia House after I bought my first DVD player.

Well the first one was terrific, original, I thought the characters were a bit better then someone above suggested. I think Sam Neil played his character perfectly. Dr. Alan Grant, same with Dern, Hammond wasn't quite as evil as the book, Nedry played by Newman was pretty good, and the big tall Jewish guy.. who played the Chaos theory guy was great, but the kids were a bit annoying. The raptors were fantastic too.

The second had the stupid gymnast kid doing gymnastics and kicking raptors in the head.. Was just awful

At least the third got back to some good death and destruction without the silly kid parts.

The book was amazing yes, and the first movie was great, and a quantum leap for special effects. But after that...

Jurassic Park is probably still my favourite popular fiction book ever. I read it when it first came out in elementary school and my classmates were reading Hardy Boys.

The movie was pretty good but a step down from the book naturally, leaving the best bits out (the waterfall scene showed up in the Lost World).

Both the sequel to the book and the movie were terrible. I don't know why Crichton did not build on the suggestion he wrote at the end of Jurassic Park that the procompsognathids had made it to the mainland. And the whole backtracking on the T-Rex not having visual acuity for motion was a bit silly too. It won't hurt you if you stay still in the first one but not the second one? Dumb.

But yeah the original was great. Love the book.

Oh right, I vaguly remember that now, with them standing in a line facing one direction or something, slowly migrating.

I can't quite remember the waterfall, or maybe I cna.. now have some weird memory..

Ah well, glad to see other people liked that book as much.

I love all three, I am a big fan of that series.

I will admit the last two weren't the greatest, but I still enjoyed them.

I imagine with #4 they will bring it back to the original. I expect a great movie.

Didn't #1 set records? That might be broken now but.. I'd like to meet the CGI guys from the first movie. They were MILES ahead of the competition. Go watch the first movie, made in 1993, compare it to movies of its time or anything in the same area. It really is quite amazing.

Jurassic Park (and to a slightly lesser extent the second book) are both shining examples of books that just didn't translate well in their move to the big screen. Jurassic Park was a great book ... which got turned into a summer blockbuster designed to sell toys to kids.

Books ... just don't translate well to movies. I know this isn't exactly an original thought but even a book that actually read as if you were watching a movie ... The Da Vinci Code ... turned into a mediocre film.

Yeah, no matter how bad people say the actual movies were, I've always enjoyed watching them for the dinosaurs.

I was one of those kids that loved dinosaurs and I remember watching the movie when I was 7 or 8. It scared me.

I really liked the book too and I loved the movie.

The second one was so bad that I don't think I even bothered with the third. I looked up the 4th one and it's the same director as the third. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. The guy also directed The Rocketeer (bad) and "Jumanji" (good). He was also "art director visual effects" on Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I guess we know where his "expertise" lies. Hopefully he can also make a good story instead of a CGI fest. It's dinosaurs, it shouldn't be hard to make a good story with real looking dinosaurs in it.

It's funny -- Michael Crichton's other books are brutal, but he had a hell of an idea with Jurassic Park.

The third wasn't nearly as bad as the second. It's worth watching for some entertaining dino clips. Rent it one boring evening, but don't expect much.

Hmmm.. I have hopes for the 4th. But doubt they'll do anything to great. Although it'll be fun to see a new adventure with those dinosaurs. They pretty amazing everytime I see them

I love all the JP's. They are fun movies to kick back and lose your braing for a couple of hours. Sure, number 2 was a bit much with the t-rex roaming the city stuff, but you know what, it was entertaning.

JP 3 wasn't all that bad either, they tried new things with new dinosaurs and had some pretty cool death scenes in it.

The first one will always be considered the best, mostly because up until that time, all other dinosaur movies were lame because they didn't look real. The effects in JP made the dinosaurs look the way they should be, like animals. Not like these ridiculous beasts.

Theres a fourth one coming out??? Awesome!!! Yeah Ive got all three on the box set. First one's amazing, the next two are pretty subpar. Still love it though. I have higher hopes for the new one in '08. Is it just me, or are all these big expensive blockbusters in the last five years or so actually turning out to be really good? I remember back in the '90s when big budget movies would be great for action, but absolutely awful acting(eg Godzilla). But Im actually quite impressed with movies lately, it seems that realism has finally taken over from over-the-top action. As long as they dont introduce another made up all-poweful dinosaur, like they did in the 3rd one, Ill be happy.

I don't know if it's just you, but it's not me. King Kong, Superman Returns, the final Star Wars, the Hulk -- they were all pretty bad. I haven't even seen Superman, but that seemed to be the consensus. They all had nifty effects and cool scenes, but on the whole the movies were weak.

1st movie was fantastic a true classic, 2nd movie was garbage, but the 3rd was pretty decent, if you haven't rented it give it a shot. It's very short though, barely 90 minutes IIRC. It's basically alot of oh look, Dinasours, run, flying ones, run, run some more, but it's decent.
